Traveler Photos of Stornoway

This is the Lady Matheson Monument. It's called that because Lady Matheson built this for her husband, a former owner of the entire island. As my mom's maiden name is Mattheson, there's a chance we're related. He wasn't a great guy though--he made a ton of money in trading opium, was knighted for it, bought Lewis, and evicted a ton of people to make way for deer runs. But his wife says he was a very kind and generous man. Who do you believe? Me and a statue of one of the relatively famous Lewis Chess pieces--an ancient set found on the island a long time ago. The family--I'm related by blood or marriage to everyone in this picture. We had a really good chat in a visitor center in the castle grounds. It's a really nice building actually.
Annie going up to Aunt Dolly's old house. She lived here till she died at age 93.
