Burley Manor's history is lost in time, but certainly dates back to 1086 as no further grants of land were made after that date when King William I decided to enclose his great New Forest, a 90,000 acre area of woodland beauty. Many different structures housed the Burley family throughout the centuries, although the current building dates back to 1852, and its conversion to a hotel in 1932. During World War II, the hotel served as a military headquarters.
