With its Georgian facade and location near the marketplace, The Great House is the town's finest place to dine, a quintessentially French hotel in a beautiful English town. The interior is also attractively decorated, with Laura Ashley prints, an inglenook fireplace, and old oak beams. Assisted by his wife, Martine, owner Régis Crépy does double duty as the chef de cuisine. He is an inventive, quixotic cook, as reflected by such dishes as grilled filet of prime beef topped with a slice of pan-fried fresh duck foie gras and served with a red wine sauce, or else pan-fried filet of turbot with a chicory marmalade (a first for many diners). For dessert, the signature offering is an iced orange and Grand Marnier soufflé with a fruit coulis and a tangy orange sauce.The house also rents five elegantly decorated suites for £76 to £96 ($144-$182) for a double, including an English breakfast.
