Foz du Iguassu is known internationally as a natural beauty symbol. The town is located in the extreme west of the river Parana which creates a natural border between Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. The River Iguassu flows from the Argentinean side providing the water for Cataratas do Iguassu, a set of 275 waterfalls and cascades, a spectacular and unforgettable display of nature. The river Parana which flows from the Paraguayan side has the largest hydroelectric power plant in the world - Itaipu - an engineering accomplishment built by Brazilian and Paraguayan resources that produces most of the energy consumed in these countries. Itaipu dam forms a Lake Itaipu another major tourist destination in the area. In Foz do Iguassu, nature lives in harmony with a town dedicated mainly to tourism and international interchange. The population is ethnically varied, thus making Foz do Iguassu one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the country.The astonishing Cataratas, one of the most beautiful natural sculptures, is the symbol of Foz do Iguassu. The river Iguassu springs in Serra do Mar, and runs 1,320km to arrive at Foz do Iguassu. The average height of the waterfalls is 60-meters just before meeting Rio Paran The falls generates huge clouds of mists from which refracted sunlight creates stunning rainbows, providing a sound and light spectacular show. There are 19 large waterfalls, but only three on the Brazilian side -Floriano, Deodoro and Benjamin Constant-. Most of the falls are on the Argentinean side and face Brazil, thus, presenting a better view of the waterfalls on the Brazilian side. The belvederes scattered on the tracks of Cataratas allow visitors to contemplate the natural beauty from many angles. Cataratas do Iguassu is located inside the Iguassu National Park and is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It is a 20-minute-trip from the center of the town.
