Park Hyatt Mendoza

Peering majestically over the Plaza de la Independencia, the Park Hyatt opened in 2001, after management restored the original facade of the 19th-century Plaza Hotel and built a seven-floor tower for guest rooms. An award-winning hotel, it is without a doubt the premiere place to stay in town. For the time being, at least, it has no rivals. Sweeping columns of granite and stone showcase the lobby, and an impressive collection of Mendocino art pays tribute to local culture. A concrete courtyard leads to a warm, inviting pool. Guest rooms that face the courtyard are a bit noisy, but the rooms in general are spacious and contemporary. Fluffy duvets and feather pillows blanket the king-size beds. Huge white-marble bathrooms are the size of a standard room in some hotels, with separate bathtubs and showers, and crystal washbasins. The exquisite spa deserves special mention: A professional team of masseurs from Bangkok give wonderful Thai massages, and the spa incorporates Mendocino wines in a variety of treatments, with shampoo based on wine acids and lotion made from grape-seed oil. A well-equipped fitness room, Jacuzzi, sauna, and steam bath are here, too. Serving as a cultural heart of Mendoza, the hotel hosts frequent events, ranging from jazz and music shows to wine fairs and flamenco dances. The breakfast buffet is the best in town. Watch out for overpriced extras such as minibar drinks and Internet connections. Next door, the Regency Casino is Mendoza's nod to Las Vegas.
