The Tsaritsino Estate (two kilometres away) was owned by Catherine the Great who built adjoining summer palaces here for herself and her son. However when the palaces were completed, Catherine imperiously demanded their destruction. Some believe the reason was her hatred of the Masonic symbols used as ornamentation, others that she no longer wished to live near her son, as they had come to despise one another.
