Hilton's first hotel in Croatia isn't within the walls of the Old Town, but with a location just steps outside the Pile Gate, it's as good as it gets. The 1897 Imperial (and its guesthouse across the street), which sheltered refugees from Croatia's civil war and took a direct mortar hit on the upper floors, has emerged as the undisputed jewel of the Dubrovnik hotel market. The hotel's new redbrick-and-white stone facade and Habsburg yellow filigree balcony railings are Hilton's face to the world, but the hotel personnel are its link to guests. Unlike many Dubrovnik hotel workers, Hilton staff members are a class act and extend the same courtesies to Brioni-suited businesspeople and backpackers alike, an anomaly in Croatia's resident-tourist relationship. While Hilton was changing worker attitudes, it kept whatever it could of the old Imperial--its stone staircases, the lobby footprint--but everything else is brand-new. Rooms are spacious and done in the similar earth/sun color schemes. All are loaded with amenities, whether you stay in a single room or a suite. It's easy to get comfy in your room with room service from the hotel's restaurant or in the huge lobby bar where you can read a newspaper or get a snack with your coffee frappe. And you have to see the air-conditioned garage and its stainless steel "car mover" to believe it.
