After another lazy morning in Queenstown, it was time to leave and head off on the first leg of our driving adventure.

We drove out of town and north along the edge of Lake Wakatipu towards Glenorchy. We didn't stop in the village but drove right to the very north end of the lake, from where roads lead to Routeburn and Paradise, over the river Dart and then south again along a gravel road to Kinloch Lodge, our home for the night. By this time it was mid afternoon so I decided to go for a walk along the lake.  I borrowed Delilah, whose serices had been offered as a local guide, and spent a wonderful hour and a half in her company along the shore.

The following morning, the rain (and a certain amount of lethargy) meant a late start to the day.  We drove to the top of the lake, and had a short stroll at the start of the Routeburn track, on the edge of Mt Apsiring National Park.  We then drove round to Glenorchy, where we went for a walk through the wetland area.  It was peaceful and beautiful.  The rain had abated and the clouds were clearing in some directions, with shafts of sunlight breaking through to illunimate the water and some of the surrounding mountains.

A pleasant morning, but we had to hit the road to head south......
