We caught the train from King’s Cross to Glasgow on Saturday, 19 August (13 pounds / person one way – beat that!). Now I was under the impression that the journey might actually be rather pretty, but as it turned out we travelled up the East Coast, which is the not so pretty side. But nevertheless, an enjoyable journey. Very relaxing and a nice change from flying. We arrived in Glasgow around 19:00 and headed straight for my old school friend, Kobus’ house, where we were greeted by his new wife, Justine, who had just locked herself out of the house. It wasn’t too much of a problem, and we were soon chilling out with a glass of wine. Kobus arrived soon after (he was working at the Edinburgh festival – he plays the violin for a living). We had a lovely supper and a nice relaxing evening with old friends.
The next day Kobus kindly did a brilliant roast chicken on the braai (BBQ). Our intentions of trying to eat less meat went straight out the window that day. It was absolutely delicious. Some of the best food I’ve had in a very long time. We spent the afternoon nursing our overfed tummies in a pub in the west end of Glasgow, watching some very good live jazz. It’s not a type of music I find easy to listen to, but when I see it performed I’m always blown away by the skill of the musicians. Another chilled out evening spent in good company. A very nice start to the holiday.
