There are endless resources for students in this university town. Just stop by the University of Texas Student Union Building to check out the scene. Austin's oldest institution of higher learning, Huston-Tillotson College, 600 Chicon St. (tel. 512/505-3000, www.htu.edu), in East Austin, is especially helpful for getting African-American students oriented. The Hostelling International-Austin is another great repository of information for students.

One of the best sources for information and bookings of discounted airfares, rail fares, and lodgings is STA Travel (tel. 800/781-4040; www.statravel.com), with offices throughout the United States. In Austin, there's an STA Travel retail office at 2116 Guadalupe St. (tel. 512/472-2900).
