Tips for Senior Travelers

by Frommers Travel Guides

The Old Bakery and Emporium, 1006 Congress Ave. (tel. 512/477-5961; www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/bakery1.htm), not only sells crafts and baked goods made by senior citizens, but also serves as a volunteer center for people over 50. It's a good place to find out about any senior activities in town. Another excellent resource is the monthly Senior Advocate newspaper, 3710 Cedar St., Box 17, Austin, TX 78705 (tel. 512/451-7433; www.senioradvocatenews.com), which you can pick up, gratis, at HEB supermarkets, libraries, hospitals, and many other places. You can also call or write in advance for a subscription ($15 per year). The online version has links to many other resources for seniors.

Elderhostel classes in Austin focus on everything from the tech boom to the natural beauties of the region and occasionally hold seminars at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
