Introduction

by Frommers Travel Guides

In the heart of Station Square, one of Pittsburgh's newest shopping and entertainment districts, stands a Bessemer converter, the remains of an old steel blast furnace. Once an integral cog in the works of the Steel City, the furnace now serves as a piece of art, right next to the Square's dancing fountain that shoots jets of multicolored water in time to the music of Christina Aguilera and ABBA.

How times have changed in Pittsburgh. Modern glass office towers, contemporary sculptures, and theaters are more the norm in the Steel City these days than are the belching mills for which the city is famous. Pittsburgh's natural beauty is also unmistakable. The city's hilly landscape is sliced by the Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela rivers, visible at every turn and crisscrossed by more bridges than any other city in the world. Add to all of this some of the nation's friendliest residents, and you've got the ideal place to get away and relax.
