- Camping in the Green Mountains: Whether your preferred mode of travel is by foot, car, canoe, or bike, you'll find plenty of good campsites in the verdant hills of Vermont. The state parks are well regarded, with many dating from the Civilian Conservation Corps days (1930s and early 1940s). The National Forest Service, aided by the Green Mountain Club, maintains dozens of backcountry sites and lean-tos as secluded getaways far from the noise of everyday life.
