Introduction

by Frommers Travel Guides

Detroit rolled out the red carpet when Super Bowl XL came to town in January 2006, and the city's renaissance continues. Dozens of new restaurants and clubs dot the downtown landscape; abandoned buildings have been replaced with high-rise luxury condos; Campus Martius Park, in the heart of Detroit, draws crowds with open-air music stages in the summer and an outdoor ice rink in winter; and the city's riverfront has been beautified with a wooded Riverwalk. To be sure, Detroit's old favorites -- the Henry Ford and Greenfield Village, the Motown Historical Museum and the Detroit Institute of Arts -- are still worth visiting. But these days, visitors to the Motor City can't help but be impressed by all that's new.
