Introduction

by Frommers Travel Guides

A small-town state capital, Montgomery is a pleasant city of surprising contrasts. There are museums devoted to local legends Rosa Parks and Hank Williams, as well as to F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. The state capital also boasts such diverse pastimes as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Montgomery Biscuits minor-league baseball. As it slowly transforms its picturesque riverfront, Montgomery continues to attract thousands of visitors from all over the world to its historic civil rights sites. Meanwhile, Montgomery hums along at a refreshingly easygoing pace.
