Introduction

by Frommers Travel Guides

The region that holds Mexico's most infamous border crossing also claims to be the birthplace of the original Caesar salad and the margarita. Who could resist that? This trip into northern Baja California combines the boisterous (Tijuana), the beachy (Rosarito Beach and San Felipe), and the beautiful (Ensenada and the Valle de Guadalupe), towns that comprise some of the most important introductions to Mexico.

Long notorious as a party-hard border town, 10-block Tijuana has cleaned up its act a bit on its way to becoming a full-scale city with explosive population growth. The town's traditional lures -- the legendary nightlife and hardcore souvenir shopping -- are now augmented by a number of family-friendly sports and cultural attractions.

For a slightly more tranquil experience -- provided you steer clear of Spring Break -- the resort town of Rosarito Beach remains a laidback beach destination despite spending time in Hollywood's spotlight as the location where much of the movie Titanic was filmed.

Continue south past surf breaks, golf courses, and fish-taco stands, and the lovely town of Ensenada emerges, a favored port of call with plenty of appeal for travelers active and low-key alike. Take time to travel inland from Ensenada to explore Mexico's emerging wine country. And from there, nothing beats the flat-lining pulse of San Felipe's beaches. Although the town is experiencing a boom in resort and real estate development, the center of town is unchanged and it makes for a good glimpse of old Baja.
