Visitor Information
You will probably come into town from the main highway via Hebron Street. The third cross street is El'azar Ben-Yair (named for the leader of the stronghold at Masada in A.D. 73). The corner of Hebron and Ben-Yair is the town's principal commercial center. The post office is at the corner of Hebron and Ben-Yair. The Tourist Information Office is in the Arad Visitors Center at 28 Ben-Yair St. (tel. 08/995-4409). Follow the signs to find the office in the commercial center of town, opposite the Community Center. It's open Saturday through Thursday from 9am to 5pm and on Friday from 9am to 2pm. There are publications of the Society for Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) here (some free, some for sale), including information about the area (and a video presentation), books, maps, and desert hiking gear. The Visitors Center can also give you advice about hotels and rooms in the area, and book you on tours, treks, and other desert activities. Admission to the very worthwhile multimedia desert exhibit at the Visitor's Center is NIS 20 ($4.30).
