Built in 1966 and still going strong, the reasonably priced Fiesta Gran Hotel Colon (tel. 91-573-59-00) lies west of Retiro Park in a relatively safe area of Madrid that's easily connected to the center by subway. If the prospect of bedding down in a peaceful setting within easy reach of the center tickles your fancy, then the Residencia El Viso (tel. 91-564-03-70) is for you. It has comfortable rooms, a friendly atmosphere, and a leafy patio where you can enjoy home-cooked meals.
