Introduction

by Frommers Travel Guides

40km (25 miles) SE of Frankfurt, 77km (48 miles) NW of Würzburg

Picturesque Aschaffenburg and some of the leading spas of Germany lie on Frankfurt's doorstep. Aschaffenburg was originally a Roman settlement on the right bank of the Main River and later became an important town in the Middle Ages. In recent years, it's grown industrially, but even with 250 garment manufacturers, the town has remained peaceful and provincial. Its many parks and shady lanes make it a fitting gateway to the streams and woodlands of the Spessart Hills. Weekly fairs are held on the square, where fishers along the banks of the Main sell seafood straight from their buckets. Many traditional shops are in a pedestrian zone, with lamps, fountains, and flowers.
