Once a stronghold of the ducs de Bretagne, Dinan is one of the best-preserved towns in Brittany. It's noted for houses built on stilts over the sidewalks. The 18th-century granite dwellings provide a sharp contrast to the medieval timbered houses in this walled town with a once-fortified château. Dinan (pop. 14,000) is one of Brittany's prettiest towns -- it's not overrun like St-Malo.
