    Getting There

Ten trains depart daily from Budapest's Keleti Station; seven of these are intercity trains, which are much faster than others. The fare is 3,750 Ft ($20/£11) for a one-way or 6,450 Ft ($35/£18) for a return. You will need a reservation for an IC train and this will be an additional 520 Ft ($2.80/£1.45). An intercity train will get you there in 3 hours. The "fast" train (gyors) leaves from Deli Station; the trip is at least 3 3/4 hours, but you don't need a reservation and the train is not as nice.

If you are driving from Budapest, take the M6 south for approximately 3 hours (the distance is 210km/130 miles).

    Visitor Information

Once you leave Budapest, English speakers are harder to find except in hotels and some restaurants. The best source of information in Pécs is Tourinform, at Széchenyi tér 9 (tel. 72/213-315; www.tourinform.hu). Tourinform is open April through October, Monday through Friday from 9am to 7pm and on weekends from 9am to 6pm; in winter it is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm. Tourinform can provide a list of local private-room accommodations, though you'll have to reserve the room yourself.

If you want to have a room reserved for you, visit Mecsek Tourist, at Ferenciek u. 41 (tel. 72/513-370; www.mecsektours.hu). The office is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm; and Saturday in summer from 9am to 1pm.

You can also get city information online at www.pecs.hu. Look for the English link at the top.
