Introduction

by Frommers Travel Guides

200km (124 miles) W of Vienna; 32km (20 miles) SW of Linz; 105km (65 miles) NE of Salzburg

A flourishing town in Roman times, Wels lies on the left bank of the Traun River in the center of a large farm belt known today for its agricultural fairs. Wels is most often used as a base for exploring the hinterlands, although it has some attractions of its own. In about 1 1/2 hours, you can walk through the town and see all the major sights.

Traveler Photos of Wels

The castle walls. Across from this, there was a building with a plaque that said Napoleon had slept there. Rene took this picture for me with my camera because I couldn't get the light right. It's my favorite shot from that day. A gothic building - it's famous in Austria. It's funny but it really is pretty, don't you think? Less expensive graves (also, they weren't really kept up but maybe they families hadn't made it in yet).
