Getting There -- Austrian Airlines serves Carinthia from Vienna, arriving at the Klagenfurt Airport (tel. 0463/41500 for flight information; www.klagenfurt-airport.at), northeast of the city, several times a day. Because Klagenfurt is a popular summer lakeside resort, Austrian Airlines adds summer flights from Zurich, Rome, London, Berlin, and Frankfurt.

Klagenfurt, located on the lines connecting Vienna with Venice, Italy, and Zagreb, is the most important railway junction in southern Austria. It's also the focal point for several smaller rail lines whose passengers are eventually transferred to larger lines to Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Bregenz. Trains arrive from several different directions at intervals of 30 minutes or less throughout the day; call tel. 05/1717 for schedules.

It's easier to take the train, but from Klagenfurt at least 20 different bus lines fan out into the surrounding region. For regional bus information, call tel. 0463/54340 in Klagenfurt.

If you're driving from Vienna, head south on Autobahn A2, cut southeast at the junction with Route 17, and go through the Semmering mountain pass. Then follow Route 83 into Klagenfurt.

Visitor Information -- The tourist office is in the Rathaus, or city hall (tel. 0463/5372223; www.klagenfurt.at); to reach it from the rail station, head down Bahnhofstrasse. Open May to September Monday through Friday 8am to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm. From October to April, hours are Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 1pm.

If you're driving into Klagenfurt and want to leave the car, this city offers restricted parking zones where you can park for 90 minutes in specially marked "blue zones," so-called because of blue lines on the road. You have to use a parking voucher to stop in limited-parking zones. Vouchers can be purchased at banks, gas stations, or tobacconists. When you park, you must write in the time you arrived and display the voucher on the dashboard, inside the windshield.
