    Area Code -- The area code for the city is 261. The country code for Argentina is 54.

    ATMs & Currency Exchange -- ATMs and currency-exchange houses have been plagued by long lines and limited cash since the beginning of the economic crisis. Two reliable exchange houses, both at the corner of San Martín and Catamarca, are Maguitur (tel. 261/425-1575) and Cambio Santiago (tel. 261/420-0277). They are open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 1pm and from 5 to 8:30pm, and Saturday from 9:30am to 1pm. Major banks, with ATMs that have Cirrus and PLUS access, are located around the Plaza San Martín and along Avenida Sarmiento, including Citibank (Av. Sarmiento 20; tel. 261/449-6519).

    Emergency -- For an ambulance, dial tel. 107 or 261/424-8000; for police, dial tel. 101 or 261/429-4444; in case of fire, dial tel. 100.

    Hospital -- Hospital Central (tel. 261/420-0600) is near the bus station at Salta and Alem.

    Internet Access -- Internet access in most places costs a meager 1 or 2 pesos (35¢-65[ce/20p-35p]) per hour. A number of cybercafes run along Avenida Sarmiento; try Mundo Internet, Sarmiento 107 (tel. 261/420-3795), open daily from 8:30am to 1am. Official Telefónica and Telecentro offices, located all over town, also offer Internet use.

    Pharmacy -- Farmacia del Puente, Av. Las Heras 201 (tel. 261/423-8800), operates 24 hours.

    Post Office -- The main post office, Correo Argentino (tel. 261/429-0848), located at the corner of Avenida San Martín and Colón, is open weekdays from 8am to 8pm.
