Introduction

by Frommers Travel Guides

    20 miles (32km) N of Belize City; 10 miles (16km) S of Ambergris Caye

The word is definitely out. Caye Caulker is no longer the secret hideaway of a handful of happy hippie backers and a few chosen cognoscenti. But this is still the epitome of a small, isolated, and laid-back Caribbean getaway. Unlike neighboring San Pedro, you won't be constantly run off the road by cars and golf carts. In fact, Caye Caulker has no cars, and the golf-cart traffic is still relatively light. Let's hope it stays that way. Still, given the amazing boom going on just to the north on Ambergris Caye, I do expect similar development to begin taking root on Caye Caulker.
