Just to the northwest of Lombok are three small islands that offer some of the best snorkeling and diving in the region. The reef is damaged and the currents can be rough, but the sea life is impressive. Snorkelers will be happy near the beaches to the north of Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno, but Gili Trawangan is renowned for great diving. Dive shops in Senggigi and the local hotels will arrange trips out to the islands. Dream Divers (tel. 370/693738; www.dreamdivers.com) is one of the biggest and best organized.
Many tourists just make day diving trips here, but the islands do offer the most basic of overnight accommodations (mostly losmen). The biggest and most popular among the expat crowd is the Villa Ombak, on Gili Trawangan (tel. 370/642336).
