“Fraser Island is a truly beautiful place and remains largely unspoilt by tourists, once again, whatever we write about ... ” |
We left the van in Hervey Bay for the day and got on the bus for a day trip to Fraser Island. Apparently there is more sand there than in the Sahara desert and you are only able to get around the island in a 4x4. We got the ferry across along with a whole fleet of monster trucks! We docked and were shown our transport for the day – a 4x4 bus and introduced to Patrick, our tour guide. Half of the people on our tour were German and required a German translator which made for an ‘interesting’ ride.
First stop (after a bumpy ride) was Central Station, a bit of the island’s rainforest. We walked along the edge of a creek whilst Patrick filled us in on the history of the island. Then it was back onto the bus and another short but chaotic drive to 75 mile beach….an awesome sight! As well as a very long beach, it is also a public highway - possibly the only road in the world on which the likelihood of hitting either a fisherman or sand dunes is pretty high! We sped along the beach in the bus which was an amazing feeling and were then offered the chance to see the whole island from above – a trip in a 7 seater light aeroplane. We jumped at the chance (especially when we got a look at the particularly lovely pilot and his sexy, knee high, white socks!) and along with 5 others boarded the plane. The runway was…surprise surprise, the beach and funnily enough all oncoming traffic moved hastily out of the way! The flight was amazing (if a little turbulent!), we saw all corners of the island and got some fantastic pictures.
We visited the Maheno shipwreck and waded through Eli Creek before breaking for a very large buffet lunch at the Eurong Beach Resort. After lunch we went to Lake Birabean. It’s a pretty unique lake as it is fresh water but it contains no trace elements, just pure hydrogen and oxygen. It was so lovely to swim in and we all came out with beautifully conditioned hair and skin (this counted as another free 'shower' for all the campers!) That marked the end of our tour and we were both sad that the day was over. Patrick was an amazing guide and made the whole day even more fun. Fraser Island is a truly beautiful place and remains largely unspoilt by tourists, once again, whatever we write about this place will not do it justice – it’s a must see!
