As number 1 or 2 on almost everyone’s “must see” list when they come to Brazil, Iguaçu (or Iguazu) Falls is justifiably a top Natural Wonder of the world, an earth-shaking and mind-altering experience. At the Foz (as Brazilians call it), first see the Brazil side, starting with a walk along the palisades above the river to view the Falls from a variety of overlooks. Recommended is the Macuco River Safari for a jeep ride through the rain forest followed by a short walk down to the river edge for a trip in a large rubber boat to confront the falls head-on. To fly like a bird over the Falls, try the helicopter ride, and to hear what the birds have to say about their incredible home, tour the Parque das Aves (Bird Park). Not to be missed, go over to the Argentina side of the river (no visa needed, but take your passport) for a completely different experience. You’ll walk on meshed metal paths looking down on the shallow waters beneath your feet and end up at a precipice over the Falls and come face-to-face with the awesome eons-old flow of water over Devil’s Throat. On the road back to Brazil there’s a Duty Free Shop and nearby Casino (with a great restaurant). For a fun and interesting time at night, go into the city of Iguaçu (an easy taxi ride) and stroll the main street, alive with people moving among the numerous chopperias (bars serving chopps, icy cold draft beer, and finger-food). For a cachaçaria serving the potent hard liquor made from sugar cane, cachaça, as well as chopps and great traditional bar food, head to Agua Doce, where you’ll also find live music almost every night.
