10.3.06

In the morning we did the short climb to the top of Queenstown hill. Had good views across the town, lake & surrounding hills. It pretty much rained all afternoon so we spent our time in the cinema

11.3.06

Did the rather strenuous climb to the skyline complex above the town, before heading further north in the afternoon to lake Wanaka. Had intended to do a hike in the afternoon, but after driving 20K down a dirt track a sign pointed out that we needed a 4x4 to go any further! Wish we knew that at the start of the track!!

12.3.06

Went to mass in the morning before driving to fox glacier. It was cloudy above the glacier when we arrived, but we got a few glimpses of it from the campsite.

13.03.06

Got up early as it was sunny and clear, headed to the glacier viewpoint for breakfast. It was impressive seeing the glacier in the valley, with green hlls alll around it. We did a walk round Lake Mattheson which had fantastic reflective views of Mt.Cook & Mt.Tasman on its waters. We headed into the valley for closer views of the glacier and to have lunch. The last ice age this glacier would have extended all the way to the sea, but with the warmer weather has retreated up the mountain to where it is today.
