Although a drive through Miami and several toll highways later, my search for an airboat ride in natural and green looking everglades proved worthwhile. The "Gator Park" just outside of the Everglades national park, near Homestead, was fantastic. Arriving at 4:00pm I was just in time to catch the last tours including an awesome feeding of huge alligators, a snake show, a gator trick show where you even get to hold one, and of course the fabulous, fast, and furious airboat ride. The price was around 17$ for everything and was well worth it. even 1 minute on the boat demonstrated just how close you can get to the gators...basically if you put your hand in the water you might lose it! And after several 30's and and getting a nice shower from the raw speed during turns, you can see fabulous birds (including blue herings and egrets), turtles, and baby gators galore. During the gator show you get to hold a baby gator with his mouth taped shut (frisky little fellas).
When you head back to homestead, you will also notice a sign..."Key Largo 20 miles"....who could resist.
