Arizona does not observe daylight savings time so they are on Pacific Time right now. Because of this, it gets dark at 8:00 pm and the sun is up at 5:00 am. It is hard to go back to sleep if you by chance accidentally wake up at 5:00. We ate “all you can eat” pancakes this morning and pulled out about 10:00. About 50 miles from Holbrook is the Meteor Crater. This was a really neat stop. This 150 ft, multi-ton, extremely dense, iron/nickel meteor struck the earth about 50,000 years ago with a force 1,000 times greater than the atomic bomb that struck Hiroshima. When the meteor struck the Earth, it was traveling at 11 miles per second. Upon impact, the meteor was obliterated into tiny microscopic fragments. The only measurable fragments are those that broke off before impact and this accounts for less than 1% of the actual size of the meteor. Really cool place to visit!!
We drove on into Flagstaff and are staying at the Woody Mountain RV Park. Hannah is having fun entertaining the birds, chipmunks, and grey squirrels. She made pine cone and peanut butter feeders. We have had nuthatches and these really beautiful birds called Stellar’s Jays. Tomorrow, we are going to Grand Falls, Sunset Volcano crater, and another vista for the Painted Desert.
