Tricky being out of the media loop for a while. We arrived in Flagstaff with the news that our camping reservation at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon had been cancelled due to the "Warm Fire" which had been burning with enough determination since mid June to cause evacuation of the area. We setted into town to discuss alternate plans over martinis at the hotel bar before exploring the town. Speaking of the hotel, despite the martini bar, it's fantastic sign, and the decor paying homage to past celebrity lodgers, it really had nothing else remarkable to note.
We had a great night out and I'd recommend it highly for anyone passing in the neighborhood. Young, outdoor-oriented populace, cool bars and cafes, with a walkable historic downtown, it was a place we could have easily stayed a few more days. But Debbie missed the tent.
Debbie says: Had an amazing grape vodka cosmopolitan in the bar next to the hotel. All booze seems to hit me quicker over here. I'm blaming the altitude and the 630am starts. Anyway.... we stayed in the "Monte Vista" hotel. Really funky little place with (seemingly) about 15 or so funky little ghosts. Well, the screaming baby in the basement is the littlest of the little ghosts. The others are bigger, like the dancing couple in the cocktail lounge and the bellboy that knocks on your door. Saw none of them. Not one. We were in the "Lee Marvin" room and i reckon he would have had enough presence in that room to keep away the ghouls forever. We did get a "sign" which was a tad strange (see pic). Went to the hotel's cocktail lounge which was a total student hang-out (in a good way). Got a bit tipsy (and got asked for "id" for booze which is the 4th time in the last couple of weeks. funny.)
Out of Flagstaff in the morning to get to Grand Canyon for a visit. I'm loving not working. So much more fun on the "road" :) dx
