Meet the driver Joe & the tour group, 9 of us again & same truck as in Kimberleys.

I get chatting to Joe about the Kimberleys & he says I'll stroll through Litchfield & Kakadu as Kimberlerys 9 day is extreme & only for hardcores. I feel well chuffed I got through it and had the time of my life too. He does say not to comapre them though cos I'll be dissapointed, I head in with an open mind.

Joe takes us first to the Wetlands visitor centre to look out over the ...

We wake up in the dark and just roll the swags n bags up, throw them on the truck and head off, its a long driving day and we want a lot of time to play at Katherine. We get to stop for brekkie about 8 then carry on driving getting into Katherine about late morning.

We do a hike up the top of the falls to a plunge pool where we get our final swim of the trip, its a gorgeous place to end. Very busy though compared to the seclusion we're now used to.

There's loads of jumping places and I dive straight in and swim to the waterfall. A few of us do some dives off the falls then climb ...

Dan and Mick take us on a short walk to Middle Springs through some more prickly grass to see some aboriginal artwork on the rock walls. we are the first tour group taken here and its Dan's first visit too. We must have made a good impression on Mick.

There is some spirit heads again and feet & hands sprayed on by chewing red bark and spitting around the body part on the wall. They are quite fascinating to see and hear Micks stories.

Mick lets Anne, Dave & me ride out in his truck & offers us a chance to offroad drive, I jump at the chance and am soon bumping around in a big ...

It was the coldest night ever, everyones tired this morning due to not sleeping. The sun soon comes up and its roasting hot & our blood is circulating again.

Our first hike is to Cathedral Gorge in The Bungle Bungles. Its a very rocky path through palms and greenery, very tropical looking. At the end is a small pool of water & a rounded opening of high cliffs, the echo goes on and on bouncing round the arc.

Next hike is down to Echidna Chasm, its a similar walk through palm trees to a canyon about 3ft wide which we walk through to the end where the rocks join, there are a ...

We get to go on a trip with Mick who takes us in a truck which looks like a cattle wagon to Wuggubun Gorge. Its a nice hike through forest and more spiky long grass, our legs are ripped to shreds now & so bloody & bruised. After a while we get to a pool with waterfall surrounded by palm trees. I take some pictures of the frogs & wasps around everywhere. While some of the group jump off the waterfall into about 2ft of deep water space between rocks.

On the way back we see a ...

Sounds lovely lets hope it is!

The hike isn't too hard, its quite flat but so hot, Gemma & me are pouring with sweat our t-shirts are soaked through its nasty. The boys have a bet of $5 to see who can get to the top of the hill in under 5 mins, us girls stand in the shade & watch them struggle up the hill, to the top in under 6mins though not bad at all.

We carry on the hike at quite a fast pace over rocks and through long spiky grass, about ...

There's a lot of driving today and we go through many deep rivers which run accross the road. We get out for a paddle in Durack River Crossing & take pictures of the van coming through.

We got into El Questro about lunchtime so ate then went on a gorge walk. Its nothing like the scenery we've been used to and its a big tourist spot in the Kimberleys. The whole group can't wait to get back on the track to our secret spots & away from tourism.

Bit of a chilly one last night so no-ones too active this morning, we do our morning routines in the bushes then get in the truck & head to Galvans Gorge.

Its a walk through long spiky grass up to our heads & the lil spiky bits resemble needles which like to stick in every item of clothing. Just by the side of the pool at the end is a rock face which has aboriginal paintings on it, a snake & a spirit which is overlooking the pool to ensure no-one swims in the foot of the waterfall as this is supposedly where the serpents live & they are sacred & should not be disturbed.

Spent a few days in Coral Bay now snorkelling off the beach, a big storm came on Saturday night so there's no access into Coral Bay now cos the road is flooded. The water is clearing a little but still extremely cloudy unless diving down to view the fish.

Alice found bed bugs so we had to move rooms, this is a bonus as we now get rid of the Flash coming in at 5am drunk & gettin in the wrong bed upsetting the Danish & also the young Dutch couple who have sex in top bunk squeaking away everynight. Poor Alice doesn't see this upside at the moment though she's covered head to toe in itchy ...

We go straight to Penguin Island, after finding a parking space for the van.. bank holiday traffic! Its about quarter mile i'd guess to walk over to the island on a sandbar submerged in the sea, it takes about 20 mins to wade over withe sea at its highest being me chest. There's kids being dragged over on there bodyboards and one baby is sailing over in his bath its so cute.

When we get over its so hot... i've left me ...

We tried to have coffee and cake from the 'cafe' but it was more like a restaurant and was charging $8 a slice... so we moved on and had noodles in a picnic spot instead.. much better!? I go first and the shower is a Giant Ant nest, they are everywhere, I try and drown lots so i can stand in there without getting bitten, and place my clothes on my shoes in a puddle of water so they can't get in them.
Hyden journal: Wave Rock

We got our campervan from Wicked after waiting about 2hours cos the computers were down. Our home for the next 12 days is Darth Vader, i drive the 350km to Wave Rock stopping off for some lunch on route in a lil layby. We finally get there at about 7 and the place is pretty much empty apart from the campers. The Wave is empty we completely alone here and the sun is about to set at 8ish. Its a pretty magnificent rock, think it would be better colours with the sun on it though.

We were going to camp here tonight originally but since we got here so late and have donw the rock Harriet and me ...

Feed up on the free brekkie at YHA and head into Freo for the big 'discovery tour' armed with map and camera I wander ound in 36c heat for 6hrs, started off around town the buildings are mostly built from the gold rush so they're very elaborate. Bathers Bay is the only beach, its tiny but gorgeous. Walk upto the Roundhouse which was used to store the abo's years ago before shipping them off to Rottnest.

apparently the sunset over indian ocean here is postcard material so must get down here one evening. Went round the Shipwreck Maritime museum which was quite interesting then headed out ...

Fremantle journal: Rottnest Island

Up at 6.30 for 7.30 ferry to Rottnest, its tricky waking and getting ready in a dorm of 10 making no noise. As we had a full day here we hired bikes for $17 to cycle round the 22km island, this would've been easy if it weren't 37c, a million flies in my face and of course the Fremantle Doctor(a really strong wind) blowing against me.

First spider sighting about 9am its huuuuuuuuge about the size of my hand and the body the size of my thumb, very very carefully approach with as much zoom as my camera will do and snap it, before cycling off quickly. Next is some little Quokkas eating in ...

Late wake up (again hehe) its so hot I just can't get going.

We walk upto Cottesloe centre to try and get some brekkie, there's this excellent market hall called The Boatshed has everything, get a nice fruit salad and iced coffee and find a tiny piece of shade to eat in. Liquorland is just over the road so head there to get some vino before heading back down to seafront, we go a bit wrong and end up in a golf club which is very funny trying to leg it accross the green without being spotted by wealthy folk, when we get accross it looks like course is fenced off too, just as i'm about to ...

Hurghada journal: Red Sea

Stayed in the Hilton for 2 weeks in Hurghada, this hotel is right on the beach, so you can have your breakfast then wander out the door into thr Red Sea.

We went on about 3 boat trips from here, one to a beach somewhere with straw umbrellas and snorkelling equipment all laid out. This was the hottest place i'd ever been, the sealife was amazing thoughm it took my breath away, there is a lot of tour boats come here, but the beach is plenty big enough for everyone, and the sea doesn't get crowded. A very enjoyable, yet tiring excursion!

The boat trip just went out from the pier to do ...

After a lond drive up the 5 arrived late and crashed at friends house.

Nice early start heading over the Golden Gate Bridge which is covered in Fog, down to Pier 39 for some brekkie then over on the Blue & Gold liner to Alcatraz, took the 'headset tour' which is fantastic, its eerie walking thru the cells hearing how it was as an inmate all them years ago, saw Al Capones & Birdmans cells which was was pretty cool, then headed out into the yard, great views that look back over San Francisco Bay, steep hills and high risers. Walking round the prison you can go into solitary confinement ...

Arrived in Las Vegas just at Sunset, booked into one of the thousand hotels and grabbed some dinner before heading 'down the strip'.

Drove up and down the strip, admiring the bright lights and hotels here, the Stratosphere, looks terrifying, a rollercoaster on top of am already massive hotel, its wild here. Theres lions and mud wrestling and sooo much money!

Stopped and watched the water fountain at The Bellagio for a while, the water to music is great to watch and quite relaxing in the madness of Vegas.

We went in Luxor and I played some blackjack for a couple o hours, had a ...

Hoover dam is HOT... its white concrete as far as the eye can see, the history behind the building of the dam is very interesting and worth reading, the dam itself is very impressive. Its bigger than you can possibly imagine.

The water held back by the dam leaves you in awe, you can only imagine how much water is there... the dam is so tall it makes ya dizzy.

Heading out of Utah now stopping at Lake Powell on route to Hoover dam.

The Lake is Huuuge, theres a hundred watersports you can do including guided boat tours around the lake, we took one of these upto Antelope Canyon, where you can carry on but you need a kayak because the canyon is so narrow. Planet of the Apes was filmed here and its spectacular, the markings in rock face are all different shades of red. We then carried on round the lake to Glen Canyon Dam, which was very impressive, quite nice as far as dams go.

In the summer it is possible to bring picnics/bbq's here, just ...

Zion is beautiful, totally in contrast to Bryce Canyon, its lush and green and teaming with nature, saw many Butterflies, Lizards, Fish and Eagles.

There's a hike up the edge of the mountain which leads to Angels landing, its extremley high up though and you need to hang onto a chain because the path is so narrow and close to the edge. The views from up there must be amazing tho!

We took a bus tour along the river stopping off at various points to take photos and explore a bit, there's some lovely waterfalls. At the very end of the valley' if you have the correct footwear, ie: ...

Bryce Canyon journal: Bryce Canyon

Another day at a canyon... but what a canyon. This place is totally different to Grand Canyon, the rock sculptures and formations are amazing, the altitude is high having beautiful views accross the canyon. The Natural Arch is spectacular.

Most of the canyon can be viewed by viewpoints in the car, but there is a few hikes if your not breathless from the altitude already. These have great views and one walks round through a little wooded area and out onto the canyon rim where a dead tree balances precariously routed to the edge.

Yosemite is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited, there's huge rocky faces which the waterfall should run down, unfortunately its dry but you can't win em all! Theres a river that runs through and forests full of deer, the views and wildlife here are amazing, you could easily spend a week here camping and still not do it all, the place is huge.

Must definately return here one day to spend longer, with a good pair of binoculars!

I walked up to the edge of the canyon on the first point and looked out, the place is breath taking, my heart actually skipped a beat it was such an amazing site to see.

Had breakfast at friends lodgings then headed up into the mountains to visit the Giant Californian Redwoods in Muir Woods. Named after John Muir.

The views on the way are breathtaking and the road is pretty hair raising on the bends, the Woods are beautiful and the Sequioas amazing , never seen such huge trees in all my life. They make the 4x4 look like a toy car! There's one huge Sequoia which has fallen down and the roots are the size of a small house.

Finishing up in San Fran today so back to friends for a big farewell dinner and some famous Californian wine...Perfect!
