Bwindi National Park journal: Mountain Gorillas

Bwindi was a great little town but really the only reason to go there for tourists is the gorilla tracking [read review!] and this is what keeps the town going so they appreciate it. There is only one Mountain Gorilla for every ten million people on earth and to help the conservation efforts and prevent more of their habitat being detroyed it is important that many people visit Bwindi and provide money for these efforts to be continued.

There is only one mountain gorilla for every 10 million people on Earth. So seeing them from a distance of 7 metres in their natural habitat was the most amazing experience! There are three families of mountain gorillas in Bwindi National Park which have been gotten used to humans and can be visited by a group of no more than 6 people each day. You are led by trackers who take you to where the gorrilas were the day before and then track them to find where they are now by seeing where they have slept and what they have been eating. After a big mix up (we were actually meant to be staying somewhere else but they ended up not having enough room for us) we ended up here at Bwindi View and it was very different to what we had been expecting. No electricity - but then there's none in Bwindi - and outhouse toilets and showers. Choice of meals was about 5 different things and you had to tell them what you wanted at least 5 hours in advance. An amazing experience. Very early mornings but so worth it for all the wildlife we saw. The best experience was definitely the cruise down Kanzinga Channel where we saw hundreds of hippos, a few crocodiles, an abundance of birdlife, buffallos, elephants and warthogs.

This was the most amazing accomodation I've ever stayed at merely because of the location. It was overlooking the Kazinga Channel and Lake George and on the other side of the channel you cuold watch elephants and buffalo drinking at the waters edge. All around the lodge there were warthogs acting as lawn mowers and at one stage there was an elephant in the car park. A truly incredible experience with great people and service. I highly reccomend it!

Had a great time in a beautiful resort. Lots of swimming in the pool and the ocean and great massive buffet breakfasts. Beautiful place to wander with sugarcane everywhere. Everyone was lovely and very helpful.

Kampala was a great place to explore - much safer than Nairobi so we felt comfotable wandering the streets and checking out the amazingly different culture. A great experience was when we went to this upstairs bar in central Kampala and looked out over the bus stations and the people everywhere. It was just incredible!

Where we stayed, at the YaYa apartments was great because it was right next door to a fairly large shopping centre with cafes and resaurants but only went into the coty centre once because it could get quite dangerous. It was beautiful weather though and we did wander a bit around our local area but found we couldn't explore too much.

We went to this place where there were lots of giraffes and a big pagoda on stilts so that when you were standing on the platform you were at the same hight as the giraffe's heads and we were given pellets to feed them. It was amazing, they stick their tongues out - big long blue and sticky - and you put the pellet on their tongue and they chew it up. The guide was putting them in his mouth and making the giraffe get it out of his mouth but when he asked if we wanted the giraffe to give us a kiss we opted out!
