Southern Thailand journal: Bangkok and Southern Thailand

Bangkok We got in around midnight and still without word from Tovah. I decided not to catch the bus/ferry with Paul the next evening to Koh Pha Nang, but rather to wait and go with Tovah the evening after that. Well, Paul ended up getting tickets for me, Tovah, and Tom, but at the last minute found out that Tovah and Tom got into Bangkok from Siem Reap with enough time to catch a bus and did the entire trip to Ko Pha Ngan in one go (30 hrs.). So, I ended up making the journey there with Noa, from Israel, who we met in Nha Trang, Vietnam and we arrived the day after everyone else. Ko Pha ...

Cambodia journal: Cambodia

We arrived in the city of Phnom Penh late in the afternoon after a long and hot bus ride. On our bus we met Lee, a guy from South Korea, who had been there many times before and knew of a good cheap place to stay on the Boeng Kak lakefront. This area had guesthouses, bars and restaurants lining the lake. Our guest house was $3 USD a night for the two of us. It was extremely hot in Cambodia and even 2 fans in the room did not do much to cool you down. While I really enjoyed Phnom Penh, we only had 2 nights there as we wanted to have enough time in Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat properly. Even ...

Vietnam journal: Vietnam

Arriving around 5 am to the bus station a little ways outside the heart of Hanoi was chaotic. This was obviously heightened due to our long and unpleasant journey and that we were running on little to no sleep. As soon as we got off the bus we were swarmed by locals trying to get us to go in their taxi or to their guesthouse. It seemed even when we replied that we were not going anywhere for the time being, that we were going to sit until we woke up a little before deciding where we were going to go and therefore to please leave us to ourselves, that they were not going to accept that ...

Laos journal: Laos

We seemed to do a whirlwind tour through Laos which is unfortunate, but necessary due to lack of time (we wanted to make it back to Thailand for the full moon party on the 1st of May). We had a very fun and relaxing time in Vang Vieng. It is easy to see how many travelers can get stuck there for ages. The town is full of bars and restaurants playing DVDs of various TV shows or movies. For instance, there was a restaurant playing continuous 'Friends' episodes, another with 'Simpsons', 'Family Guy', and some with different movies. These restaurants not only serve your usual, everyday foods, ...

Chiang Mai journal: Bangkok and Northern Thailand

Bangkok Tovah and I could not believe how nice the Bangkok Airport was when we landed that we even considered sleeping there that evening. After a quick and painless customs process, we got a taxi to Khao San Road- seems to be the backpackers mecca of Bangkok. The street is lined with bars and restaurants, food, clothes and other various market stalls. After one night of staying right on Khao San Road we opted for a room at a guesthouse a street behind it. We did some sightseeing such as taking the ferry and walking to Lumphini Park. The park is awesome. Not only is it beautiful, but ...

Kathmandu journal: Nepal: Kathmandu & Boudha

We arrived back in Kathmandu and found ourselves in the middle of a crazy Hindu festival- Holi Festival. It is a colorful festival (literally), celebrated in March or April according to the Hindu calendar, and is meant to welcome the spring. Upon first impression, it looked more like paintball chaos in the streets. Tovah and I foolishly decided to grab our packs and walk to find accommodation rather than taking a rickshaw. We learned we made a mistake not even a minute into our walk when we became forced to take part in the festival as plastic bags with water dyed different colors were ...

Wendy and I arrived into the Kathmandu Airport, which looks like more of an American Highschool than an international airport. It cost $30 (USD) for the visa, given upon arrival at the airport. We took a taxi to the Thamel, an of Kathmandu. The taxi drivers will try to take you to a hotel of their choice, but if you decide to stay there the ride is free, otherwise the ride is 350 Nepal Rupees [$1 USD= 70 Nepali Rupee], so if the place is nice it may pay to stay there.

At first we only spent one night in Kathmandu, mostly at an outside restaurant listening to a live cover band, and ...

Agra and the Taj Mahal

Our trip to Agra was centered around a visit to the world famous Taj Mahal. Charlie, Anna, Wendy and I arrived a bit shaken into Agra at 6:30am, or so, to be bombarded by auto-rickshaw drivers trying to give us rides to hotels of their choice. This can be extremely frustrating and attacking when you aren't sure what area you want to go, where you are, or what time it is. We got a hotel in Taj Ganj about a 2 minute walk from the Taj Mahal's gates. We were only there for the day but wanted a room to rest and freshen up in. 250 rupees between the 4 of us. We got some ...

New Delhi journal: Delhi

We spent about 4 or 5 days in Delhi. Most of the time was spent drinking Chai at various rooftop restaurants, where I wasn't sure if I was in the smog or above it. At least I was out of the street. The big cities, like Mumbai and Delhi have really shown me how polarized this country is, it can be tasty and repulsive, bright and dingy, argumentative and easy-going, a constant surprise. Delhi is old and new, cows and auto-rickshaws, book carts next to internet cafes, the streets are lines with brown water and garbage while bright colors of people's clothing goes by, with shops everywhere. As far ...

Getting a good deal, we held onto the driver's number, which later caused us problems. The drive from Pathankot station was 2+ hours and very windy. We had to have the driver stop due to my motion sickness.

Jaipur

We arrived into Jaipur as the sun was rising and took a rickshaw to the hotel Alex booked for us called Ganesh Hotel. It was so nice to see him there waiting for us especially since it was so early in the morning. It was across the street from where he was staying with his family. While the location was perfect, he had not checked out the rooms before hand and unfortunately, to his and our surprise, they were quite unappealing (old and rundown, bloodstain on my pillow, no shower only a bucket to fill with water for showering...). After a few glasses of chai tea we had a bit of ...

I woke up on the train on my birthday, as we were nearing the Rishikesh train station, to Tovah giving me a lovely card and beautiful turquoise stone ring present. Tovah, Anna, Charlie, and I met up with Kiera who was on another train car at the station and the five of us squeezed into a rickshaw that dropped us on the west side of the Ganges River. From there we walked over the bridge to Swargashram on the eastern side and put our bags down at Chotiwala's restaurant (great food and inexpensive) for a bite to eat. After, Anna and I watched the bags while the others ventured out to find ...

Varkala journal: Kerala: Varkala

It's amazing how people, who you by some small chance cross paths with, but at any other given moment would never have met, become a part of your world. Had Rahul not seen Tovah and I walk past or chosen not to stop us we would have never met him, his cousin Alex, their brother/cousin Raj, and Iris (Raj's girlfriend). Fortunately Rahul did decide to stop us, asking us why we thought it was that many tourists did not give him the time of day and often dismissed him rudely when trying to start up innocent conversation. And fortunately we did decide to stop and offer our opinions. We ended up ...

Goa journal: Goa: Palolem Beach

Arriving after a long train ride and trying to figure out which was the easiest way to get from Margoa train station to Palolem Beach, we opted to share a 6 seater rickshaw with our new aussie friends. It looked pretty rickety, having only 3 wheels, but with "Jesus" written across the windshield how could we go wrong. It took about an hour and a lot of "I think I cans" to get this mobile up those hills. Wendy and Gavin were sitting backwards with no clue at the many tragic accidents we missed. Wendy only could sense the danger by our facial expression. After awhile I stopped looking ...

Cochin (Kochi) & Fort Cochin

Wendy and I arrived in Cochin (aka Kochi) at Ernakulam station at about 3pm, and made plans to leave the next day to Alleppey. Cochin is mostly a city, and bay area, with the most historical areas in Fort Cochin. We took a quick ferry to Fort Cochin for 2.5 rupees (one way). Fort Cochin has many small alleys with cobble stone streets, churches, and Portuguese influenced architecture. When arriving off the ferry we hoped a auto-rick shaw to Jew Town (it's really called that), to visit the Pardesi Synagogue to admire what is left of the 1568 building. ...

Moshi journal: Mt. Kilimanjaro: 7 Day Trek

The first part of this entry is meant to be useful information/suggestions for those planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. There was not much useful information when Tovah and I were researching our trek, so we hope the following will be helpful.

Searching other travelers blogs we luckily came across the name Donovan from Boots n All travel network consistently when reading about Kilimanjaro. Apparently he was helpful in organizing quality trips up the mountain for many people. We decided to get in contact with him after reading about some horror stories concerning various companies and ...

Mumbai (Bombay) journal: Mumbai & 1st Overnight Train

Tovah and I arrived in Mumbai/Bombay around 1:30 am. Having had a hard time being allowed into Mauritius, due to not having a return flight to the USA, concerned us and left us busy trying to come up with identical responses incase we were questioned. Fortunately we did not have any problems and were, in fact, surprised by the ease and quickness of getting through customs (even being ushered through without having our bags xrayed while everyone else returning home had to wait in the long lines to have, what seemed to be, their cardboard crates inspected). We were not surprised, however, by ...

When Tovah and I received our seats we had no idea how lucky we were to be seated in row 85. After venturing upstairs in the plane we sat down next to Vince who is living and going to school in Mauritius. We chatted with Vince about things to do in Mauritius and he kindly offered to give us a lift to the north part of the Island (where he lives with his family and where Tovah and I were heading).

After almost not being allowed into Mauritius due to not having plane tickets back to the United States, even though we have tickets leaving Mauritius for India, as well as tickets from Nepal ...

Serengeti National Park

Acacia (our overland tour company) booked us on Sun Safari's 3 day adventure (costing about $300/per person). They came to our campsite in Arusha packed up our tents, mats, and day packs and headed us out the four hours to the Serengeti in 3 4x4 safari trucks (Toyota Land Cruiser modified to have a flip top for game viewing). In groups of 6 we headed off.

The Serengeti is usually very dry, but they have gotten so much rain this year (global warming) that it is all green, and lush.

After almost 9 hours on a shuttle bus from Moshi we arrived in Nairobi, Kenya. From a hotel drop off point Tovah and I hopped a taxi to Karen Camp, in Karen (a Nairobi surburb) where we were meeting up with Piet, Nel, Dzingi, and Scott from our overland tour. It was really nice to see familiar faces after spending the week climbing Kilimanjaro! We spent the remainder of the evening catching up on the past weeks events and Tovah and I even splurged on dorm beds ($5/night, sometimes there were hot showers) as we did not feel like pitching our tent so late at night.

Malawi.. the warm heart of Africa.
Malawi is said to be getting better all the time, as their government is changing. Their last president ruled like a king, making all sorts of strange rules, like no men entering the country were allowed to have long hair (having border officials actual cut off ponytails), and the banning of Simon & Garfunkel's "Cecilia" after a bad breakup. Though the new government is corrupt, education is on the rise and the people's heart is ever strong.

Our new group consisted of the same three guides (Piet, Nel and Dzingy) and Patrica (swiss from the last ...

This entailed taking the meat out of the freezer and putting it into someones locker until we were in the clear. These patrols are due to the scare of foot and mouth disease and so they want to be sure you are not bringing meat into the country from another country.

Anyway, when we arrived at our campsite we were taken on a Bushman walk. There are not that many Bushman left, but they are a people ...

They really need a bridge, it's a very short distance.

Our first stop was Victoria Falls National Park where we got to see one side of the falls, as it is 7 kms wide.
Namibia journal: Namibia: Days 3-11

Fish River Canyon

Our first stop in Namibia was Fish River Canyon. It is the second largest canyon in the world. After a fairly long truck ride we were dropped off at one side of the cliff top so we could walk along the canyon to where our truck would be parked. The canyon, as well as the surrounding landscape was beautiful. Our group made it to where the truck was parked just as the sun was beginning to set. Once again we were able to continue with our theme of experiencing each sunset together as a group and ate the awesome dinner our wonderful guides had cooked for us while we ...

Citrusdal journal: South Africa: Days 1-2

Wendy and I are on an overland trip/tour. We started in Cape Town and are ending in Nairobi, over 42 days. For the 1st leg of the trip there are 16 tourist on our truck. The group changes in Livingstone, at the halfway point, about 19 days. There are a lot of overland companies that follow similar routes, we chose Acacia because of price and sites viewed; we're extremely glad we did, because the crew (well organized and friendly) and group have been great. We all met in Cape Town at a hostel and got introduced the night before we left at an overview/predeparture meeting. The next ...

Cape Town journal: Cape Town

Wendy and I (Tovah) arrived in Cape Town late to discover that our Hostel, the Ashanti (which had come highly recommended), was more like a frat house. While the facilities were nice (wood staircase, airy entry way), the rest was lacking. It was a dramatic rise in prices from our previous hostel (90Rand-no free internet, breakfast or hospitality- with other hostels ranging from from 55Rand to 80Rand) and it was grossly over booked. They had 4 bunk-beds (the metal-rickety kind, not the nice quiet wood ones) per small room with little ventilation. Plus, they had 1 kitchen + fridge for the ...

We meet Brenda and Pascal at 7:30am. We spent all day with them, laughing and stopping at various light houses and functional harbors. From the small towns around Simons town to the Raw environment surrounding the Cape Point to the breath taking beaching towards Camps Bay, it was the perfect day spent with two great aussies. The pictures speak a thousand words.

We head tomorrow to start our 42 days of camping up North towards Kenya. We have no idea what the internet capabilities are going to be, so please keep in mind that the updating with be sparse, not as detailed as it has been. ...

Cape Town journal: Cape Town: Table Mountain

After an early start moving hostels, Tovah, Charlotte, Kirsten, and I began the 45 minute walk from town to Table Mountain. In retrospect, it might have been a better idea to take a taxi there and save our legs and energy for the climb....seems we were a little over ambitious! We made it to the hiking path at about 10:00 am and began the more strenuous than imagined ascent up the mountain. The path consisted of rocks and boulders that really put my short legs to the test. There were times I had to use my arms to pull myself onto the next boulder. Anyway, we got up the mountain in record ...

Stellenbosch journal: Stellenbosch: Wine Country

We got into Stellenbosch at night and planned to have only 1 day there, leaving on the Baz Bus the next morning. Stellenbosch is a college town, a very beautiful college town with Victorian Student houses, and students braai-ing (cooking-out) on their lawns. It made us miss our days at Madison. However, we had only a day and a lot to figure out.

There are hundreds of vineyards in Stellenbosch, so we had to pick an area and a means for transportation. We did not have a car, and found that at the tourist bureau bike rental was too expensive being 90 Rand/day (after the 4th Vineyard, we ...

Knysna journal: Knysna

Tovah and I headed straight to the tourist information center after dropping our stuff at the hostel. There we asked about how we could get to the Knysna (pronounced Nyz-na) Heads, which are these beautiful cliff faces. One of the "heads" has huge houses on it, while the other one had nothing built on it. The lady there told us we would have to take a taxi that would come to around 100 Rands each way! We knew that was out of the question so we asked if they had the minibus "taxis" that we had taken in Swaziland. She told us no, so we decided to walk after being told we were crazy since it ...

Hermanus journal: Hermanus

Once again Tovah and I decided to extend our stay in Hermanus after getting a good vibe from the hostel, Hermanus Backpackers (we arrived at night so we didn't even get a good look at the town- nonetheless it was a good call). It was a laidback hostel with very chill people and lots of animals (a puppy, hand sized kitten, dog, and cat).

Most people who come to Hermanus, use the town as a kick off point for the Shark Diving trips, but we weren't into the idea of 5 people in the water, in a cage with snorkels, waiting for a shark to get attracted by chumb (fish guts/blood). Instead, we ...

The second Tovah and I arrived at our amazing hostel, Ubuntu Backpackers, we decided to make our stay in J-Bay 2 days instead of 1. The hostel is a beautiful house overlooking the ocean. It is owned and run by Jamie and Elizna (a really cool, young couple who have backpacked before and thus know exactly what backpackers like in a hostel). They put most, if not all, the work into the hostel (i.e. painting/decorating it) and it is outstanding! It was the first time since Tovah and I began our travels that we did not sleep in our sleep sacs, but instead slept under the clean sheets and on the ...

Well, there is not much to report on Port Elizabeth (P.E.) as we arrived at 11:00 pm and left at 6:45 am. Aside from the lovely hostel owner (well, the owner's mother) who waited up for us, woke us in the morning and made us breakfast, we did not see much else. Oh yeah, and the woman's cats like to snuggle. Being on the top bunk, I (Wendy) didn't get any love. However, I woke up to Tovah screaming, "Ähh, Wendy, the cat's on my head!!" and so on.

I did want to use this entry on the blog to talk about the 'traveller subculture' and what we have come to call the great migration. Other than that there are a bunch of vacation homes, and 20kms of natural beachfront.

We were put in a cottage, about a minute walk down the hill from the main house, towards the beach. The cottage had it's kitchen, living room, bathroom, and 4 bunks. The little patio area was had a direct view of the bright blue waves crashing into Cintsa's river mouth. Needless to say we loved it, though it did have it's down falls.

There were ...

The hostel is actually located in a game park- Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, but since it was dark, we didn't see how incredible it was until the following morning. We spent the evening playing pool and having a few beers with the guys that work there (Moimoi, Jabulane, and Vellie).

When we walked out of our room the next morning we ...

Saint Lucia journal: Saint Lucia

Please note, pictures will come once I find a computer which will upload them, chances are it will be in Cape Town, around Nov.11. But we have got some amazing shots!

After our sad departure from Swaziland, Wendy and I (Tovah) boarded the Baz Bus again for St. Lucia. Swaziland was beautiful, and so welcoming, but after being so far from any shops it was nice to get to St. Lucia. It's a touristy, resort town, looks like it could be in the Keys, lots of people go here for fishing. We were more interested in using this as our hippo hunting site, as well as the kick off point for ...

Port St Johns journal: Port St Johns

The whole time Tovah and I were in Port St Johns it rained, except for about 5 hours one day and so we decided to go for a hike. One of the guys that worked at the hostel wanted to get us a guide, but said we could do it on our own depending how adventurous we were (since he knew we wanted to save money). Well, it wasn't long before we figured out what he meant!

Tovah, Andrew (this dude we met from Canada), and I set off on a hike to the light house which was the first part of the 4 hour hike.
Durban journal: Durban

Tovah and I only stopped in Durban for the night since it is a mandatory stop on the Baz Bus. Besides not be interested in seeing big cities as much as the smaller towns, we heard it was quite dangerous. We were happy that this guy we met from Liverpool wanted to go out for dinner with us as the area seemed a bit sketchy. We had great Indian food (we love curry) and it turns out that Durban has the 2nd biggest population of Indians next to India itself!
