Phuket journal: Phuket..Prelude to the Beach Bumming

Oh Phuket..before coming here..my friend Adam had warned me against any high expectations I may have had about Phuket and boy was he right!! Complete touristy town, not nearly as much culture compared to Chiang Mai if any and well I definitely won't have to visit again.

The reason why I came to Phuket other than acting as a launch pad for the other islands that I want to visit was to see Phang Nga Bay which i did today. I booked tour with a Canoe company to see the famous James Bond Island and even that was disappointting!! Thank goodness to the guides and our personal guide, Jack as in ...

Chiang Mai journal: Chiang Mai..a place to do not see!

I left SFO and landed in Seoul, Korea after a 15 hour flight, after a 3 hour lay over, I boarded a 5.5 hour flight to Bangkok where I stayed at an airport hotel, the Convenient Resort. Left Bangkok at 9:55am for Chiang Mai where I officially started my trip!

Chiang Mai is a wonderul city that shouldn't be missed when in Thailand! There isn't much to see here but lots to experience. You don't see spectacular architecture or jaw dropping temples but you will have great food, walk many streets of lively night markets and go on memorable trekking journeys in the jungles! My favorite thing to ...

Athens journal: Athens..it does smell in Athens!

I left Hydra for Athens on the 7am ferry..arrived in Piraeus and took the metro to the Hotel Grande Bretagne! I had studied the metro system and routes a few days prior enroute to Hydra via Athens so I had a good idea of where I was going and what transfers I needed to make. the Hotel had it's own metro exit so that helped greatly in finding the location!

Days before I was supposed to be in Athens, I was told by other travelers that Athens isn't a place to be and that there isn't too much going on there. Being forewarned and knowing that I should be there two days prior before coming ...

Greece journal: Gearing up for another trip to the EU!

So here I am gearing up for my annual trip abroad! I couldn't think of a more stressful time right before leaving a trip- ever! We had our Ironteam kickoff yesterday, Colleen's Birthday party was yesterday and Fleet Week started yesterday as well! I made IT kickoff but unfortunately missed on the latter two- so sorry! While packing, Mel called and asked how I was doing. I told her I had so many thoughts about IT and Greece in my head going on at the same time that I was stressed out and I can feel myself shaking?? When was the last time that happened?! Geez! The really busy week at work ...

Greece journal: Yi Does Greece! Backpacking Adventure Part IV!

Friends, it's that time of year again when I need some well deserved and needed "me" time. Apparently, it always happens in the Fall and across the Atlantic somewhere. This year, after much thought, I've chose Greece. Yes, just Greece, one country for two weeks. No seven countries in three weeks thing like I did last year so it's going to be a little different. I will miss the long train rides passing through the beautiful countryside but I have a feeling that the views from ferrying through the Greek Islands won't be too bad!

It's been such a hectic month...year..that I haven't had a ...

Hydra journal: Hydra- I am in love with this place!

I left Mykonos early in the morning yesterday. I was scheduled to take the 7:30am ferry to Rafina and then somehow find my way over to Athen's main port, Piraeus. On a recommendation from Eric, I added Hydra as a place to make it out to during this trip. My goal was to make the 2:30pm ferry to Hydra.

When I left Mykonos in the morning, there weren't any taxis over in taxi square so I made the lone 3 mile or so walk in the dark morning. If I looked to my left at the cruise ships in the calm waters..I was reminded of Titanic. If I looked right on the cars passing, I felt like a vagabond! ...

Mykonos journal: Mykonos- A Nice Town To Hang Out!

Whether I was going to make it out of Naxos to Mykonos was in question all day Monday. My ferry was scheduled to leave Naxos at 1:10pm but the northern winds were pretty brutal that morning so the ferry was cancelled. I don't do well with "no" so I asked again a few hours later and what do you know..it was running again! So I rushed back to my pension..grabbed my stuff..said bye to Despina..paid her..got my passport back and rushed to the dock where I chat it up with a couple of Canadians and New Yorkers. While we were waiting at the port..we heard that they had cancelled the ferry again..but ...

I left Santorni at bout 3pm on a HUGE boat with escalators and all enroute to Naxos for a taste of Greek life..not Greek commercialism. I found just that in Naxos. When I got off the boat, I was greeted once again by a group of folk shouting "rooms"...one lady even chased me down but I already had a place..Despina's Rooms. After finding my way through the narrow streets of the old quarters, I found Despina's Rooms. Despina..a Greek Grandma greeted me...shook my hand and then held my hand and led me to my room. It was very cute..Greek Grandma that is. The room was plain but comfy..heck I just ...

What can I say about Santorini except that all you hear is true! It's a gorgeous place! I had high expectations coming here and was afraid that I would be disappointed like I was with Venice but I wasn't. Disappointed with Venice- every girl- when you think Venice..you think romantic..cute..romantic ..this is the hopeless romantic in me making a rare appearance..you get to Venice and it's not all that cute or romantic..still beautiful but definitely more unique than anything else.

Last night, as I was sitting on the harbor journaling, an older man (I'll refer to him as Crete Grandpa) sat next to me and started up conversation. It was very endearing and cute at the same time. I really enjoy talking to old people..they always seem to enjoy the simplicities of life a little more, you know? Crete Grandpa started by asking me if I was from New York? He is the second person that has asked if I was from NY. I had a really hard time understanding him because of his heavy accent but I imagined that he had a hard time understanding me as well but it was the experience that ...

Heidi dropped me off at the airport after visiting my favorite coffee place and bakery in the neighborhood and then off to SFO we went.

I got on Lufthansa's direct flight to Frankfurt and scored in terms of seating! I was the first row behind business class in the economy cabin which meant lots of leg room! The flight to Frankfurt took a bit less than 10 hours and from there I had to connect to Munich. So I was at the train station and incredibly bored for hours. I was in a Mickey Ds waiting for time to go by..scouted the place..out of about 17 or so people..I was the only girl..not exactly the best situation so I was looking around to see if I can befriend anyone that seemed "innocent"..no one I wanted to approach...and then.. 2 nuns came walking in!!

I arrived in Munich- my final stop of a three week journey before I head home to good ol San Francisco! I am not looking forward to my very long flight home but for the time being..I will enjoy and take in what I can of Munich.

Munich is a very livable..yuppish kind of city. It is clean..large pedestrian only zones..I mean..can you guys imagine Union Square being pedestrians only?? HUGE beer jugs everywhere. .understandably this is the home of Oktoberfest! Pretzels taste so much better here than home..lots of asian ppl live here..it was so cute this morning when I saw a Chinese little ...

Oberammergau journal: I am in a real castle!! Holy Moley!

I made it to Munich and took a day tripto visit two castle- Linderoff Palace and Schloss Neuschwanstein- the castle that the Disney Castle is mirrored to!! I boarded a bus at about 8am and traveled with about 60 others in a two level bus..not too bad. We had our own time once we arrived at our destination.

Schloss Neuschwanstein was HUGE! Well..from the outside anyway..the inside never got finished as King Ludwig II died in the middle of construction work so it never got done. But we did see the few rooms that were finished which included his bedroom which happen to have a theme of ...

So after a rainy day in Rothenburg..I find myself in the town of Nurnberg..a quick hour away from Munich where I will be tomorrow. So I have been keeping up with the US news via CNN..the only english channel available..and all they show is coverage on the war..oh and am I glad I got out of Budapest before the protest got into full swing over by the parliament building!

Nurnberg is a cute little not so touristy town. This town houses the Nazi Document Center which is where Hitler based out of during his time. The town itself is a strolling town..lots of pedestrian only streets..many open ...

Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber journal: Everyday is Christmas in Rothenburg

I arrived in Rothenburg today after a five hour journey and what should mark my last long journey before heading home. Rothenburg lives up to my idea of a medieval town on the Romantic Road of Germany. There really isnt anything big to do here but roam the streets and take in all the Christmas shops--yes it appears that everyday is Christmas in Rothenburg..oh and eat pretzels! I think like paella in Spain..by the end of this trip..I am will be pretzeled out for a long time! I took a NightWatchman`s Tour last night which was extremely entertaining..this guy..tall guy dressed in medeival gear ...

Salzburg journal: Salzburg..all about Mozart..

I arrived in Salzburg from Hallstatt in the late morning and discovered that I had entered the world of Mozart and left as a fan! Huge fan! It is Mozart`s 250th birthday and Salzburg happens to be his birth place and where he resided though he is buried in Vienna. Everywhere you go..Mozart is what you are reminded of!

Salzburg is a tourist town all around! Shops line historic streets with charateristic signs..house carriages everywhere..cafes. .pastries..shopping.. tourist town!

I bought one of the last two tickets for the Best of Mozart concerts to see what it was all about.

I arrived in Hallstatt later afternoon today and the time started out a little frustrating because October is the start of their down time here..places were closed including the Tourist Info office but that didn´t stop me from going in anyway!! I needed their help in finding a place since I didnt have any luck..the lady was kind enough to help me out..maybe she saw the desperation on my face!! She found me a zimmer (room in a family home) for 25 euros which was fabulous! I spent the rest of the day doing nothing but roam the streets of Hallstatt..its amayingly beautiful here..any colors that ...

After aboout 7.5 hours of night train..I arrived in Vienna. I, again was the only one in my night cabin which was great! Was woken up twice I think or maybe three times for passport control..not too bad. I still got my sleep in.

Vienna is such a girly city! It is full of palaces..magnificent gardens..very pretty! Land of chocolate and cake cafes..Mozart is huge here right now since its the 25th anniversary I believe..I may have to double check that.
Krakow journal: Krakow= cold!!!

I arrived in Krakow at about 6:20am via the night train from Budapest. My night train ride went surprisingly well. I spent a bit more money and reserved a "double" sleep car vs a triple and there wasn't anyone who had the other bed reserved so I had the whole thing to myself! I was woken up twice due to passport security though when crossing the border into Slovakia and then again in Poland.

Krakow is romantic! It's small compared to Prague but I think thats a part of its charm! I had no idea how cold it was going to be here..you can see your breathe as you walk down the street. It's a gathering place for Hungarians..speedo clad older men and women. It was actually a very cute scene and experience..you see locals playing chess..women socializing..great people watching!!
Bled journal: I hope Bled makes my dreams come true!

I took a day trip to Bled today since logistically it works out easier than staying there over night. It is about 1.5 hours away from Ljublana and better to take the bus than the train since the bus stops right here in the town vs a few miles away.

When I arrived in Bled..I was taken away from its beauty! The lake water was clear as it can be..people do swim it in when its warmer..the trees were in all sorts of colors. So calm and peaceful- just what I needed! I took the stroll around the 2.5 mile perimeter of the lake and then hiked up to the castle for the view. I went on a boat ride ...

So I left SFO at 4:50pm on British Airways..surprisingly my flight was on time and not delayed! I arrived in Heathrow at 11am then had three hours to transfer airports over to Gatwick to catch my 2:15pm flight to Split, Croatia AND then from there catch a flight to Dubrovnik. No, they don´t make it easy to get down to the Dalmation Coast. I finally landed at the Dubrovnik airport where a Croatia Airlines bus took me to the Old Town of Dubrovnik for 35 kunas (6 kunas=$1). In Dubrovnik awaits a homey room with private bath in the home of Lidija or at least that´s what she said in her email to ...

Salema journal: Salema- sleepy beach!

So last time, I left off at Lisbon. I think I had just woken up from a nap? So to continue from there..we went to see this church was that really hammered by this earthquake and instead of re-building it, they thought it was more romantic to leave it the way it is. It was beautiful and amazing to be in the structure of it but without the rooftop. It was built in the 1890´s. After the church..I um..went back and took another nap. I haven´t been feeling 100%..not sure it is was the flight or if I am finally reacting to all the meds I was on for my foot and then the hives I got right before the ...

Rome journal: I LOVE ROMA!

I took the first commuter train out to Naples the next morning and was in Rome by about 9am. I had two places booked because the hostel wasnt very clear on whether they had me confirmed or not..so I booked a room at a convent for backup! Yes..a convent! haha..I tell ya..these Italian men would send any gal into a convent! But my hostel worked out fine and so I ended up staying here at Casa Omaltas!! I swear these places do not believe in elevators!! I dropped off my stuff and explored Rome!! I LOVE Rome!! So much to see and places to go..on my first day here I went to the Colosseum...Roman ...

My bus was at midnight..it was a 6.5 hour bus ride to Naples..the driver was flyinf and we got there in 5.5 hours! I woke up during the middle of the ride and saw that he was driving extremely fast so I strapped the seat belt on!! Got to the Naples train station at about 5:30am..for me Naples was the type of place that I wanted to leave as soon as I got there. The train station was the first time that i felt a little scared. Random people are sleeping on the ground..smell of alcohol..it was yucky! Anyway..took the first train I could to Pompeii..to see the Roman ruins before going to Sorrento. ...

I had just spent a day in gorgeous Positano..so the following day..I took the boat cruise and sailed by Capri and down the Amalfi Coast. It was very relaxing and just nice. Interesting thing happened..I think this man in his 50s tried to ask me out...he started conversation with "i just have to ask..where are you from?" I think he is just intrigued by Asian women..he told me he had a korean girlfriend..first Asian woman his ever met..then he attempted to ask me out to dinner..but I said I had an early train ride..phew!
Siena journal: Siena- Italy's college town..

I left Florence in the morning and took the bus to Siena because it was faster that way and cheaper too. My plans for Siena was pretty last minute so finding a place was pretty difficult..I booked a hotel that was recommended by one of the many ones that I had called but was full. When I called to booked..she had told me that the place is close to the town center so I thought ok..cool..that would work! So i get to Siena and didnt really have anything or really knew how to get to where I was suppose to be so I went to the Jolly Hotel across the street and asked her for a map and how to get to ...

I found my place to stay hidden behind the vespas and market..Ignacio greeted me at the door..very nice and friendly guy! The place looked a bit scary though..walking up steps to get to it and even the door looks like a mental institution of some sort. I explored Florence yesterday..met a girl from texas who is studying here for 4 months...studying Design..today I visited the Uffizi Museum and I visit the Accademia later (home of Michaelangelos David)..right now..I am at an internet place waiting ...

So I got up early because my plan was to catch the first train out to Pisa (6:37am) and then stop in Pisa for an hour or so before going to Lucca which is a town just on the outskirts of the Tuscany hill towns. So its 6:30am..I am at the train station reading my guide book..I felt something tingling on my waist so I went to slap it...and then I felt a sharp pain and saw a bee fly out! The next morning, we caught out 630am bus to Granada which turned out to be 3 hours long and through the mountains. The bus driver would drop ppl off at the most no where of places and pick ppl up at the most random places..likes in the middle of some rode with nothing in sight!
