Luxor journal: Wow! I'm actually in Egypt!!

I haven't written anything in here in literally three or four months, which I feel terrible about because I think there might actually be a couple of people who were interested in what I am doing. Anyway, it is second semester, I am in Luxor, Egypt, and we are going to Cairo in two days. Since Singapore I have been to Malaysia, the Maldives, and the Sultanate of Oman. I also went home for Christmas, which was amazing. We are more than halfway through second semester. After this we head to Greece, and then six Mediterranean and European ports before arriving in Poland on June 24. I can't ...

Singapore City journal: Hello Again

Hi again!! Well, I obviously haven't updated this since about Vanuatu. I kind of got lazy, especially since there wasn't any kind of good internet service in the Solomon Islands. I was home for two weeks at Christmas - it was amazing and I definitely wasn't ready to come back. It's hard to believe that I won't be home for 6 months now. Oh dear.

The ship is exactly the same - it's like I never left, which is kind of weird. It is really quiet right now, because there are only 15 students and the teachers back. Plus the generator is off, because we are getting our power from the marina. ...

Port Fila journal: Vanuatu is my favorite port!

Hey Everyone! I'm sorry I never did the second update I promised from New Caledonia. I couldn't get back to the internet. Anyway, this is about Vanuatu. Enjoy! Hahaha! We went on a really really cool port program. I am excited to tell you all about it. So we took a bunch of vans to the other side of the big island yesterday morning, and then boats ferried us to an island called Nguna. There is a marine protected area set up by all of the villages on Nguna, and the neighboring island, Pele. So one of the villages on Nguna gave us lunch and coconuts and stuff and we hung out on the beach. And ...

Noumea journal: European Paradise in the South Pacific

Hey journal readers!! This is going to have to be short, because we are meeting someone named Guillame at the ship at 12:00 to go to the beach and go windsurfing!!! I am SO excited!! I have never been, because I never was strong enough to lift the sail in Whitefish. He is going to give us free lessons!! Yesterday we went to the Goro Nickel Project, which was a bit weird. We just sort of milled around and got to wear really sweet hard hats and orange vests. We tried to go to the cultural center, but everything got delayed, so we didn't get to see any of the exhibits. Noumea is really gorgeous. ...

Suva journal: Fiji In Style

Hey everyone! I'm leaving Suva today, so I thought I would write a goodbye/summary entry about my experience here. Fiji is really nice, but Suva is definitely on the wrong side of the island for the gorgeous touristy beaches that you see in postcards. All of the resorts, beaches, snorkelling, diving, etc, and the international airport are on the other side of Vita Levu. Suva is actually very industrial and modern. Visiting the forestry park was probably the highlight - it was beautiful and we had a blast just roaming around the forest and randomly swimming in rock pools and waterfalls. The ...

Suva journal: Fiji Fiji!!

We just got here tonight, so nothing much as actually happened yet. Fiji seems like a really interesting place - we had delicious take-out Indian food for supper. Downtown is pretty bustling - it is very modern and there are tons of atms and stuff all over the place. We are thinking of going to a movie tomorrow night!! I haven't been able to make phone calls yet, because many of the pay phones don't allow collect calls. However, I have free wireless internet on board the ship, so I'm not complaining. We are planning to go to a park that supposedly has swimming holes, pools, caves, picnic ...

Apia journal: Malo from Samoa!

Malo, Blog Readers! (That is Samoan for hello, and talofa means good morning) It is Tuesday morning at about 10 after 10, and it is our final day in Samoa. Of course, I've been stuck on gangway watch, so I can't leave the ship until twelve o'clock. We are thinking of going to the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum and then the natural rock slides after lunch. We've had a pretty good time so far - it is ridiculously hot here. The girls have to wear at least knee length shorts and have sleeves on our shirts. No tank tops or spaghetti straps. Apparently women wear sleeveless shirts and short shorts, ...

Apia journal: We Made It!!!

Wow. We finally made it to Samoa after another really long sail. This one was tough - I have been REALLY homesick. Sometimes I think that I actually want to go home early. We crossed the equator and officially became shellbacks instead of polywogs in an ancient sailing ritual, but I can't reveal details to all of the polywogs who will read this. It is a big fat secret. That was our last long sail - from now on it is island-hopping in the South Pacific!! I so glad that I'll be able to call home almost once a week. I can't wait to be cold again - it was almost 40 degrees today. Samoa is a pretty ...

Honolulu journal: Oh My God! My first port!

Wow! So I've been at sea for 20 days, ever since we left Vancouver on August 26. I can't even begin to describe how bizarre the experience has been. Anyone who has ever been in the open ocean will understand what I mean. Until this morning at about 7:00, I hadn't seen land in 20 days. We have literally been trapped on the boat with each other, 66 people in total, surrounded entirely by water. The ocean is incredibly intimidating, but exciting too. It took a while to settle into a routine, but now I think I've pretty much got school and everything figured out. It is tough because every single ...
