Oslo journal: The small capital of Scandinavia

Oslo is the smallest of the capitals of Scandinavia, which you also feel quiet fast if you have had the pleasure of visiting Stockholm and Copenhagen. However that does not mean that Oslo do not have anything to show.

Whenever I have visited Oslo I have a little route which take you around the city in a day. You can by pram go to Holmekollen in the outskirts of the city. Holmekollen is an old olympic ski ressort for ski jumping. Besides from the big jump you have a chance to by a cup of coffee and a sandwich (to overprices) and enjoy the view of Oslo and it's beautiful fjord.

Back ...

Stockholm journal: Beautiful Stockholm

Often we have never visited the sights just next door... That was how I has it with Stockholm. I had over and over again heard about the beauty of the city, but never taken the time to go there myself. So when then chance came across in the summer of 2000 I grapped it immediately.

Being from Scandinavia myself I found the vibe of Stockholm very similar to Denmark. However, it is always nice to experience new things and impressions. Gamla stan (the old part of Stockholm) right in the centre is extremely charming. The Kings castle is placed in the middle of it as a big landmark overlooking ...

Kampala journal: The ambiance of an African capital

Well, my trip to Uganda was my first trip to Africa ,but would prove itself not to be the last. I had never really planned to go to Sub-Saharan-Africa, but during an internship the chance was suddenly there. I could go to Uganda for 5 weeks to conduct a small survey about youth participation in HIV/AIDS prevention programmes… 1 – 2 – 3… And I found my self in Kampala almost by coincidence.I must say that Uganda took me by storm and not least Kampala.

The city is to me very unconventional. The main street you can walk in about 20 minutes and from a rational point of view there is ...

Kasese journal: Safari in Queen Elisabeth National Park

My trip to Kasese had two purposes, one was to visit a fellow trainee who lived there and the other was to go for a Safari in Queen Elisabeth National Park.

Kasese is a medium sized Ugandan town with no big must sees. However, there is an ‘abandoned’ mining town of which you for example can do as we did take a boda boda to take you there and then walk all the way down which take about 1½ in a nice and easy speed and just enjoy the surroundings.

What can make Kasese of interest is that it is somewhat close to Queen Elisabeth National Park. Here you can either stay at big luxuries ...

Kisoro journal: Gorillas in the mist

I went to Kisoro from Kampala by bus a long but very pleasant trip, which took me through Uganda’s beautiful scenery. The reason for my visit in Kisoro is that it is the closest town to Mgahinga National Park where I should trek down mountain gorillas.

Well, before I go more into my visit in Kisoro I must draw the attention to something SUPER important. It is not possible to buy a pass to trek gorillas at Mgahinga from Kisoro. This pass you have to buy from Kampala and it costs around 250$ if I remember correctly. May seem a bit pricy but a once in a life time opportunity to experience ...

Mbarara journal: The place of politics and milk

Mbarara is one of the bigger towns of Uganda, but if you only visit Uganda for a short while this is one of the places I would choose not to go. When I was in Uganda Mbarara was known for fostering politicians and other VIPs as well as being the town of dairy products.

On the way to Mbarara you cross a typical tourist sight where you cross from the northern to the southern hemisphere… Here is a picture opportunity of you standing with on leg in each hemisphere. You also find a few souvenir shops here, but if you decide to buy anything here you need to know that it is much more expensive ...

Jinja journal: River rafting at the souce of the Nile.

During my five weeks in Uganda I went to Jinja (second largest town of Uganda) a couple times. It is very limited what Jinja as a town has to offer, but you can go to the source of the Nile to see an amazingly beautiful landscape. Green and lush and small traditional fishing boats trying to get their catch of the day.

Another thing to do in Jinja and at the source of the Nile is a grade five river rafting. The rafting a very fun outing which can either go on fur a half or full day. There are some very crazy rapids, which make it fun and gives you an adrenaline kick and between the rapids ...
