Sydney journal: Beautiful Cape Breton

We arrived in Cape Breton on a lovely day and set up at my youngest brothers' place on beautiful Bras d'or Lake. I have 3 brothers & 2 sister in laws here in Cape Breton and it was wonderful visiting with them and their families. The families treated us royally. The Hog Rally (Harley Davison motorcylceds) was in Sydney while we were here, over 2700 of them and it was a sight to behold. We also saw the biggest fiddle in the world down by the harbor. We visited Rita MacNeils Tea House and just missed her by an hour.

We put our 5th wheel in Annette's driveway from Thurs. until Mon. and visited from there. We went to church with Annette on Sunday and the preacher was fantastic and we had heard him in 1999 in Vernon. Bolton is 1 hour from Toronto and a lovely lush area.

Whistler journal: Whistler, BC

We left Surrey for Whistler on Monday. We were anxious to see Carson, who was now home recuperating and to see if we could be of any help to Carson or Shannon and of course to see Lauren who turned 1 yr. old while we were gone. The weather is gorgeous and it is lovely here. Must say though, the most expensive RV site in all of Canada and USA. We spent time walking in Whistler Village, Dave spent some time with Carson alone, then today we brought lunch & supper over to them as well as taking Lauren for a long walk, took her home but she wanted to go some more so we walked her again.

Marysville journal: Marysville, Washington

We left Spokane on a lovely clear hot day around 11 am. Today we went through so many different type of landscapes from prairie to dessert to mountains. We went throught so many different type of landscapes from city, prairies, desert & mountains. We only stopped in Leavenworth for diesel as we had been there several times before. It was 84 there. The Stevens pass was lovely but as we approached Everett there were not campgrounds and the cars leaving the city was bumper to bumper and we headed onto the I-5 at rush hour, very nervous. I spotted a Wal-Mart just before dark. Were we ever thankful ...

Blaine journal: Blaine/Canadian Border

Well we got all our purchases together along with the receipts and headed on the road. We stopped in Burlington at a big RV store and had a ball looking (and buying )some things for the RV. Around 2 we decided that we had bought enough and went for lunch before hitting the I-5 again. We hit the border around 4 pm and had absolutely no trouble. The fellow even said "Welcome Home" and did it ever feel good to cross the border and get into Canada. We hit the same RV spot in Surrey that we visited when we came to say goodbye to Robin and the grandchildren. We set up and will surprise them in the ...

Spokane journal: Spokane, Washington Day 2

It was a lovely clear hot (86) day and we loved it. We went shopping at a big shopping centre in the morning and then after lunch we went downtown and saw some of the city while on a gondola ride and then walked through a lovely park. It was a gorgeous day. We even went and did some shopping at a costco. After supper here in the park we met a couple from England who come over to USA/Canada for 3 months and travel in a 5th wheel then they park it for 3 mos. go back to England and then back again. They just love it.

We left Kalispell around 11 am (our usual time to get on the road). The day was one of the nicest in a long time. The roads were good and the weather was fantastic and we got in a hike, the first in a long time. The pictures I took of the falls don't do it justice, it was lovely. We were in 3 states today, Montana, Idaho and into Washington. Our spot in Spokane is lovely, a little like our spot in Vernon. Talked with Dave's son today and he is gradually recuperating.

Kalispell journal: Kalispell, Montana

After leaving Havre around 2:40 in the afternoon, we saw more prairie and then near dusk mountains appeared. We generally don't travel in the evening as the amount of deer on the roads make's one think but God was with us and we arrived in Kalispell around 8:45 at a Wal Mart. They are so easy to find and there were around 5 RV's in different areas of the parking lot. It was quite warm but earlier it looked like rain, it cleared up nicely.

We were the last to leave Wal Mart. Last night Dave beat me again at Scrabble (he generally does). We left at 9:45 and after several stops (Glasgow, Harlem) we found out that this area is owned by natives and were not friendly to us. Again a lot of prairie and ran into 10 miles of road that they are working on and it was gravel, dusty and very slow going. The roads have mostly been very good on the #2. We arrive in Havre around 6 pm (gained 1 hour today) and set up. Very friendly here and Dave made arrangements to have the truck serviced as we hit the 100,000 km. 3 other big RV's that we had ...

The last couple of days have been like driving in the prairies in Canada except it has been fields & fields of corn and soy beans and then later this afternoon we headed into more hilly and scenic country. Actually we also went through more cities and one of them called Wisconsin Dells is like a cross between Las

Vegas and Disneyland. We had never heard of it before but it was amazing how much touristy stuff was there. I didn't get many pictures as it came upon us so suddenly. We ended up staying at a campground not far from this area but we won't go back to the "trap".

We left Nappanne around noon. Again we pulled off the road and had a picnic lunch. Around 3:30 outside of North Hayden, Indiana, we had to pull over and stop for 1 1/2 hrs (with lots of truckers as well) and wait for people to clean up a bad accident (the person was killed). We arrived in Ottawa, Illinois at 8 pm arnd ended up staying in a Wal Mart parking lot as we couldn't find a campground. There were 3 RV's and about 5 semi trucks. The trucks run all night though, I haven't figured that out yet but it makes it noisy.

Around 30% Amish work at the Newmar factory. It was interesting to see the horse & buggies and the young men with their beards mixing with todays ways.

We left Emmett Michigan on a cloudy cool day and hoped to get to a spot in Indiana. We arrived at dusk and stayed for 3 days. This was the biggest park that we have stayed in so far. It was called Jellystone and had over 1200 spots. Everyone ran around on golf carts, I thought that I would go nuts hearing them steady. It was a party weekend as they had their Halloween party before people stopped coming back for their weekends. It ended up being a very hot & humid weekend.

We left Plymouth around 10 am and arrived at the Indy 500 Speedway around 1 pm. It was a lovely drive but I can't believe that we headed to a city that size. Dave had always wanted to see it as well he still hopes to see a race but it was nice to do the tour without a race going on. We went on a bus tour of the track and then throught the museum. We got home around 8 pm so it was a full and tiring day

Emmett journal: Emmett, Michigan

After spending a night in a different bed, we spent a relaxing day with Betty. We went down to the bridge (the one that crosses to the States) and saw the lovely parks, etc. I had likely my last feed of fries from the chip wagon. Betty took us to her hair dresser and Dave & I got a much needed hair cut. Betty's mom (who lost her husband 2 weeks ago), her sister and her neice came over for supper. We left before dark to come back to Emmett, Michigan, USA to where we had left the 5th wheel. We did not take it into Canada.

We hit a deteour as soon as we got over the bridge and it through us off base for awhile.

We woke up to a foggy day that later turned into very heavy rain. By noon we decided to try and get some miles in but decided with the weather being bad that we again would stay on the secondary roads and for the most part, they were good but had to go onto the interstate once we were 1 1/2 hours away from Port Huron and this was not fun with it getting dark and the rain so heavy but we managed to get to the campground that we had reserved. We will leave the 5th wheel here tomorrow and go over to Sarnia, Ontario to visit a girl friend for a few days.

We woke up to more cloudy weather and we also watched some of the programs on TV regarding the 5th anniversay of the 9/11 events. It is hard to believe that 5 years have come and gone. We didn't get on the road until 11:30 am. I had packed a picnic lunch & we stopped by the side of the road near a lake and enjoyed it. We stayed off the interstate and went through the country and even though this took longer, it was much more relaxing. We arrived at this site around 7 pm.

Today was the first time that we had a problem getting a spot. Had to try twice. We ended up in a nice spot though and it is amazing how at home we are as soon as we set up. We are not doing a lot of touristy things right now. Dave finds the huge trees over whelming.

After spending a very wet night in a RV Park near Clearfield, we headed on the Interstate 80 towards the PA/Ohio border at stayed 2 days at a place called RV Village Camp Resort with has 250 sites. The amazing thing about this spot is that so many of the campers run around on what looks like a golf cart instead of walking. They seem to do this for something to do. Mercer is called a borough, not a town nor a city. We went to an E Free church Sunday morning. It was an old church, full and so many young people. It was good to be there and the message was good. After that we went into a place ...

It is called the YANKEE CANDLE and actually a lot of you likely have bought candles made here. There was a lovely restuaurant, candle museum and a Christmas store and lots more. The heat that the glass blowers work in was unbelievable. It is lovely stuff and very expensive but after seeing what goes into the making of just one item, it us understandable. Later down the road in Windsor also, Dave toured the American Precision Museum which is a National Historic Landmark which celebrates the birthplace of America's industrial revolution. Stopped in a small town called Farmington and had a homestyle meal, which really tasted wonderful. I had the turkey and I took half of it home.

Another rainy day (at least this morning) and we headed for a tour of Ministers Island. You can drive across "the bar" at low tide which will take you over the ocean floor to the summer residence of the railway builder Sir William Van HorneY you have to make sure you are not stranded over there. It is 500 acres that the province now owns. First an Anglican minister by the name of Andrews lived there, then Van Horne and now the province owns it. It was a life of wealth that most of us can't even imagine.

These seemed to be lobster areas but were not wealthy areas. As the day was overcast, the pictures did not turn out as well but it will give you an idea. We then left for St. Andrews which is a beautiful spot on the most southerly cape of New Brunswick. It was quite a feat driving up to Cape Enrage as it was very steep and winding and people were amazed at us driving the 5th wheel up there but Dave did a fantastic job. What a lovely spot I had made a picnic lunch so we sat outside at a picnic table and people watched as we ate. We also stopped at a little place called Alma just at the Fundy National Park and bought some live lobster and live mussells for supper. We have almost had enough of this rich food.
Hopewell journal: Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick

We arrived at the Ponderosa Pines RV campsite around 5 pm after leaving Truro NS around 11:30. It was a lovely drive along the Truro NS into New Brunswick. We came around Moncton, did not go in as we had been there before with Norm & Nancy McDonald. After setting up we headed to the Provincial Park to see the rocks, some were called Flowerpot swhich were created by the highest tides in the world. This was another highlite of this trip. What a spectacular site! We did try some fishing but the mosquitoes got the best of us.We stayed here until Sunday morning.

We spent the night in the compound at the ferry depot and got up at 6 am as the ferry was to leave at 7:30 only to find out later that the ferry was going to be 2 hours late. It was a rainy morning but the trip went fast and we arrived in North Sydney around 4 and my brothers met us at Tim Hortons as Chris had some mail for us that was forwarded by the Sommergils in Vernon. After our coffee stop, we headed to Antigonish where we had stayed earlier in our visit to Nova Scotia. Next day it was pouring and we headed to Truro.

Before we heading to Port aux Basques we took a drive up to Cox's Cove, a small little village at the cape north of Cornerbrook. We found out that the average wage is $7/hr and a fellow who has worked for a company for 23 years has no pension when he retires. The area looked like money was hard to come by.

This ferry took 14 hours and the waters were rough but Dave and I played scrabble, read and ate and the hours went by and we landed in Newfoundland around 9:15 and headed off onto land in the dark of the night not knowing where we were going but hoping to find a campground, which we did. It only had a place to put our 5th wheel, no hookups but we didn't mind as we were tired.

Sydney journal: Cabot Trail

We left around 8 am with my brother Tom to do the Cabot Trail. We did not take the 5th wheel as it was set up on the Bras D'or Lake at my brothers. We had all kinds of weather today and it took around 12 hours to do this trail. Tom, even though he had lived in Nova Scotia for years, had never done the Cabot Trail so it was a treat for him to see it.

Antigonish journal: Antigonish, Nova Scotia

We left Charlotte Lake late and stopped in a place called Memory Lane Heritage Village (which was in the 1949 era). The roads today were awful. When we got to Sherbrooke (we are now heading north up to Antigonish) we again visited a heritage type of village but we had only an hour until closing time so we hurried through it which was too bad as it had a lot of history and neat older homes and businesses to see.

Shelburne journal: Shelburne

We got up at 5:30 to drive to the Halifax airport to pick up Sylvia, a friend from Vernon who lives in Shelburne. It was 1 1/2 hr trip to the airport and then back down to Shelburne with a stop at Lunenburg to see the Bluenose II come in and we arrived in Shelburne around 5 pm. Shelburne is a lovely town started by the Loyalists in the 1800's. The houses, harbors, etc are just lovely and Sylvia was a wonderful tour guide. On Friday to Sundays was to be a big celebration called Founders Day but the storm came in and the rain came down so a lot of preparations went down the drain.

We stayed outside Halifax in a small area of Martins River. We headed into Peggy's Cove and that hasn't changed since I was there 20 years ago. The fog spoiled a lot of picture taking but we had a nice time anyway. On the way there we stopped at a Memorial that they had put up in the area for the Swiss Air Flight III that went down in 1998. The trip to Halifax via Peggy's Cove was very windy but worth it.

We left Hilden where our RV site is (outside Truro) on a nice sunny day and headed on the Glooscap Trail to the Cobequid Bay and Minas Basin (Called Fundy Shore Drive). I couldn't possible put on the pictures of the gorgeous sites that we saw today. We also headed north to Cape Blomidon and the road stopped at Cape Split. There was a 14 km hike that we decided that we wouldn't do. They call look outs look offs here. This again was a wonderful day and can't believe how many new and wonderful sights there are in this country of ours.

Lots of other people we of like minds. It was very awesome to watch. We then went to the Stanfield factory. As you will see in a picture, it is very old. We picked up a few groceries on our way back to the RV site.

Springhill journal: Nova Scotia

We left PEI in the pouring rain. We went through New Brunswick and then into Nova Scotia and if we thought that we had been on bad roads, this day proved that there are worse. We followed the Blooscap Trail and stopped in Springhill to see the Anne Murray Centre and it was very nicely done. The area was remote, it was obvious that this is a poorer area and we even had a hard time to find a place to eat and when we did, they even wrecked a caesar salad. We found a campsite outside Truro.

We stopped in at Charlottetown first to have a coffee with Joy Schellenburg as she was in PEI for a few weeks. After several hours (long coffee break) we headed to the southern eastern tip of the island to a place called Pt. Prim and had lunch in a quaint chowder house and then visited one of the oldest Light houses in Canada. After that we headed up north to St. Peters, made several stops along the way and then headed home down through the centre of theIsland which were the only good roads we found the whold time that we were there. What a lush gentle island though. Well worth visiting.

We first headed up in the middle of PEI to the north and visited the Village of Avonlea which was made famous from the story of Anne of Green Gables. It was nicely done and all the workers were dressed in the clothes from that era. There was always some kind of entertainment going on.After that we headed back down to the City of Charlottetown and visited Founders Hall-Canadas Birthplace Pavalion which gave me a much better idea of how Canada was formed and when. It also was well done.Got home later and I was exhausted.

North Bay journal: Visiting with some May relatives

Arrived in North Bay after staying the night before in the Wal Mart parking lot of Sudbury. Ann, my sister in law (my brother Stan died 10 yrs ago) was a gracious hostess and fed us like kings and toured us around the Museum where she volunteers and showed us the area down by the lake which is quite lovely. They have also hand carved 2 Carousels which are quite something to see.

Sault Sainte Marie journal: Off the Road for a few days

We left Neys Campground around 10:45 & it was windy. Our neighbors were from Chilliwack and on their way home. We stopped in at Wawa, Agawa Bay Lookout and it was one of the nicest drives and nicest days that we have had so far. We found a spot just outside of Sault Ste. Marie called Glenview RV Park and on Monday, Dave will get the truck serviced. On Saturday we tried 3 different fishing spots with no luck, not even a nibble. on Sunday we listened to Pastor Larry the internet as there were no E Free churches in the Sault.

Marathon journal: Views along Lake Superior

We left Thunder Bay around 9:15 am and stopped at Kakabeka Falls and walked around the trail. It was a mini Niagara Falls but there was a nice board walk so that we could take pictures and see different views. Stopped to see the Terry Fox Memorial outside Thunder Bay. Quite moving, he was a determined young man. Arrived at a rustic campground at Ney, Ontario and walked for 2 hours that evening down to Lake Superior. It was a lovely walk.

On Saturday we drove to the other side of Scarborough to see the Taylors, Dave's cousin Mary and her husband Don who are from the West. We had a great visit with them and she served us a wonderful lunch. After that we headed to my niece's place in Goodwood. They have a lovely large home and 4 beautiful children. My nephew Jeffrey May,his wife Maria and their 2 children came from Orangeville and my sister in law came from Bolton and we all had supper together. It was great with so many being together as it had been years since I had seen some of them.

Toronto journal: Busy downtown Toronto

On Friday evening we went into Toronto at rush hour to see Lisa, Dave's niece, who is from a small town in Alberta. I couldn't believe the traffic and how well Dave did driving in it. We never saw another truck down there. We headed back to Bolton around 11 and the traffice went like crazy and I was exhausted when we got home from tryng to see the road signs. We had a good visit with Lisa & it was amazing to see how well the small town girl has adjusted to the big city. She is taking her nursing so that is what brought her to Toronto

We fished for perch, thanks to Luke, and it was quite wonderful. I spent the first 10 years of my life along the St. Lawrence. At the little RV spot we could sit outside at the picnic table and email (which I did until dark) and also print things (Dave set it up with a long extension cord). We also bought Dave some fresh shrimp as Matane is noted for them and he loves them. Next day was Dave's most challenging day of driving, some grades were 14% but the views were worth it. We are so glad that we decided to go to the Gaspe as we would have missed an awesome part of Canada

We went to the Plains of Abraham to see if there were any fireworks (we had been told at the RV campground to go and see them) but we missed them by one night. The next day we took a tour of the City and countryside. Old Quebec was fantastic. It was truly a wonderful experience to visit this city.

Barrie journal: Barrie (Shanty Bay) Ontario

We settled in at a KOA RV park (most expensive so far) and then went down the road to surprise my niece Shannon who I hadn't seen since she was a teen and she is now a mother with 2 lovely children. We had not told her that we were coming though her Dad knew and she was really surprised. She actually lives out in the country in an area called Shanty Bay.

Montreal journal: Montreal was full

Montreal was full due to the holiday, Ste. Jean the Baptisite day, so went ahead to Repentigny and stayed in a Wal Mart lot. The next day we went to Trois-Rivieres ,Quebec, where we walked around for a few hours and then watched a Ste. Jean the Baptiste parade (we had too as our 5th wheel was blocked in with people's cars waiting to see the parade).

Yesterday I visited at the West Edmonton Mall with a friend Karen that I had not seen in years(she helped me with my friend Barb who passed away with cancer) and then today we went back into the city to see Dave's Aunt Margaret & Lizzie Hamm. They never had children of their own so they have loved and prayed for their neices and nephews. They are very interesting as they have a lot of history to tell.

After having breakfast with Martin & Agnes we headed for Warburg to visit with Fred & Eva (Dave's sister & husband). We stayed from Thursday afternoon until Monday morning. Had rain most of the weekend until after we left. Headed into Edmonton twice (over an hours drive away) to see a friend Karen. On Sunday we went to church in Warburg and the pastor (Voth)there knew Fred & Laverne Hislop, Steve & Liz Skultety (from Kitamat days). We also got a few games of dominoes in as Fred & Eva like to play that game as well.

Another lovely day on PEI so we headed up part of the interior and then over to the west coast and all the way up to the top which was called North Cape. In O'Leary we visited a potato museum (PEI grows a lot of potatoes) & along the coast we saw fishermen bringing in seaweed and then right up to the North Cape where there were a lot of wind generators which was an awesome sight to see.

Left Balzac (just before Airdrie) and it was only 1 degree out. Arrived in Red Deer, checked in with Velner RV to find out when they will do the repair that the people in Penticton were supposed to do. Then we went to see Lydia (her husband was in the hospital recovering from surgery) and just like Lydia, she had a huge meal ready. It was great to get caught up and she hasn't changed a bit!

Woke up to a lovely sunny day and thought that we would try a Baptist Church that was recommended to us. It was quite an experience and we left feeling very empty. We then went to Summerside for the rest of the day. What a beautiful town. We walked the boardwalk, heard some great entertainment (singing, young gal playing the fiddle and step dancing). Headed home in the early evening to have some fresh lobster for supper before going to the rec centre at our RV park for the entertainment.

PEI is called the Gentle Province and we found it to be true. We stayed in 1 campground for the 5 days and it is owned by a christian couple who also sing and every night they had a sing song. It was a treat to stay there and it was only 2 km from the bridge.

The morning started out lovely & sunny so we went for a hike along the beach in our RV park. It is called Rocky beach and we will see why on a photograph. Just as we got to Perce to walk out to the rock it started to rain. We managed to make it though and as soon as we were done it came down in buckets so we headed back to our home away from home. We then listened to Pastor Larry's last 2 sermons (on the internet). It felt good to hear his message & to hear his voice.
