Nava's tri-level earth-toned interior is gorgeous -- the work of architect Bill Johnson, who is known for creating fabulous settings. There's a bundled spruce ceiling beamed with tree trunks, a kiva-style fireplace, a copper-hooded exhibition kitchen, and a rustic and elegant decor rich with Southwestern and Native American art.Don't come here expecting a beans-and-burritos Tex-Mex meal. This is truly inventive Southwestern cuisine; you'll find enchiladas and tostadas and the like, but they're stuffed with such treats as rock shrimp and jalapeño honey mustard, or ancho-chile steak and portobello mushrooms. You can even make a meal from the long list of starters -- an easy way to sample the creative menu. The appetizer of mussels dry-roasted in a hot iron skillet and served in spicy chipotle broth is a favorite among regulars. Save room for the roasted-banana enchilada, served with warm caramel sauce -- a great combination. Nava's extensive wine list was composed to complement the contemporary Southwestern dishes. There's also a large selection of tequilas, beers, and margaritas; the prickly-pear margarita is a big seller.
