Nyack's a charming town, and in the new Lanterna it got what it deserved, a charming restaurant with flair but few pretensions. A small and mostly minimalist space with wood tables, white tablecloths, white walls, and slow-moving ceiling fans, it features one long corridor and two small sitting areas -- one up front and the other back by the kitchen. The young chef, Rossano Gianni, turns out authentic Tuscan dishes and also offers cooking classes, demonstrations, and wine tastings. Lunch might be a simple affair of homemade pasta and soup or salad, while the dinner menu features risotto, fresh fish (monkfish sautéed with white wine and herbs is a good one), and hearty meat dishes such as filet mignon topped with toasted walnut and Gorgonzola sauce. As you would hope, the wine list features some good Italian selections. On a nice day a few tables are set up on the sidewalk for alfresco dining.
