More information on Chakra

An eccentric, informal place that started the Shlomzion HaMalka Street revolution (it was the first on the block -- the other restaurants flocked in to share Chakra's success), Chakra offers some of the most interesting meals in town at any price. This is the personal creation of chef-owner Ilan Garousi, who has filled his menu with his own interpretations of seasonings and ideas he's picked up from all over the world. Ilan's enthusiasm and energy are boundless: To his standard menu, he adds about 12 nightly main course selections and all kinds of dynamite appetizers, depending on what's fresh and available in the market. Come with friends so you can sample and share. You might find a Bokaharian soup made with chickpeas, lamb-meat dumplings, and sweet-and-sour dried berries; or shrimps on grilled figs; or lighter than air fish kabobs in coriander. Or you could find tempura shrimp, or chicken filled with rice and minced lamb spiced with cumin. Spicy, delicious European and Central Asian meat stews abound. Desserts are inventive and worth trying. The menu is divided into "Land" and "Sea," rather than into first and main courses and some listings are appetizers or tapas-style dishes. The waiters will translate. The crowd is locals in the know, and a smattering of tourists from the nearby King David and David Citadel Hotels. Prices are very fair, and most people come away dazzled. Tasting medleys of small dishes can be arranged. Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice.
