This dashing new Yaletown restaurant opened in May 2004 and quickly became a culinary and people-watching spot of note. The dining room is a handsomely designed affair with two levels, lots of light wood, and a special "community table" around an induction cooking surface so some lucky diners can watch Chef Sean Riley prepare their culinary teasers. The concept at Coast is to offer an extensive variety of fresh seafood from coasts around the world. So for starters you might have ahi tuna sashimi and avocado salad or a wild, white sea tiger prawn cocktail. Then, from the grill, you could order Pacific cod, wild B.C. salmon, South Pacific John Dory, Indian Ocean tiger prawns, or hand-harvested scallops. "Off-shore" temptations might include Alaskan king crab gnocchi, Louisiana blackened snapper, North Carolina rainbow trout, or Liverpool-style fish and chips. For those who aren't inclined towards fish, there are a few land-based dishes, such as chicken breast stuffed with wild mushroom and goat cheese, beef tenderloin, a veal chop, and Moroccan spiced Australian lamb sirloin. The cooking is just right for every dish, never overdone or underdone, never overwhelming the fish, and a joy for the taste buds.
