This is lordly living on a grand scale. France's premier château hotel, this one-time Renaissance ruin has been restored by 400 artisans and craftspeople. Antiques, paintings, and art, much from the 17th century, fill the mansion. The individually decorated guest rooms are sumptuous, with antique beds, period velvets, embroidered linen sheets, and down pillows; one unit is named for Mme de Sévigné, who spent a restless night here in 1673. The bathrooms have tiled floors, brass fittings, and luxurious tubs. Although this place does have a pool, it's not for the young and restless -- you won't find a gym or tennis courts. La Salle des Gardes serves elegant Continental fare.
