Italian food is too often served in dark restaurants in remote locations, which is perfect for romantic dinners, but not so great for the downtown lunch crowd. Frank Varallo changed all that when he opened his Italian eatery near the downtown business district. Familiar dishes fill the simple menu. Order spaghetti or lasagna, and it will arrive at your table in minutes. Although the food arrives fast, the atmosphere is leisurely and peaceful. The setting makes Varallo's perfect for getting out of the office and enjoying your lunch. The claim to fame here is the Cincinnati-style chili, hot and spicy chili poured over a plate of spaghetti and sprinkled with monterey jack and cheddar cheeses. It takes some getting used to, eating chili with spaghetti, but it's delicious.
