Herbsaint would be the locally made pastis found in, among other places, the popular local cocktail, the Sazerac. As a restaurant, it's an alternative to similarly inventive but much higher priced peers in the Quarter, with thoughtful dishes planned by 2006 James Beard nominee Donald Link. Be sure to try the Herbsaint, tomato, and shrimp bisque -- it sent us into rhapsodies, and we aren't even soup fans -- and the "small plate" of shrimp with green-chile grits. Salads can come delectably decorated with figs, bleu cheese, and a sherry vinaigrette. For once, vegetarians will not feel left out: The herbed gnocchi with eggplant tomato sauce is a marvelous dish, while the carnivores will be equally as pleased with the cane-braised short ribs. Or try the fried frogs' legs, because you can. The desserts are standouts; we could eat the coconut-macadamia nut pie, but that would take up space that could be occupied by the chocolate beignets with their molten boozy interior, something we could eat every day of our lives.
