This remains a favorite restaurant of my husband, and he eats at fine establishments nearly every day. On a splendid day in May, Jim selected a lunch entree of jumbo shrimp and softshell crab in a Niçoise sauce with baby arugula and young herb salad, and declared it delicious. Popular winter menu items have included an appetizer of chipotle marinated Eastern Shore grilled quail and a main course of porcini-crusted black cod with smoked onion potato gratin, garlic spinach and truffle vin blanc.You're sure to spot owner Amarjeet (Umbi) Singh as he circulates through the restaurant. Singh opened Butterfield 9 in 2001 to instant acclaim -- or the food, but also for the classy décor, which features large, stylized black-and-white prints of handsome men and women dressed in 1930s, '40s, and '50s fashions. The overall ambience is of a dinner club from a different era, specifically the one that Nick and Nora Charles inhabited in the Thin Man movies (Butterfield 9 refers to a phone exchange used in the films.) Here's a tip: The $35 pre-/post-theater menu is a great deal, giving you three delicious courses for the price of the average dinner entree; I'd go for the pretheater (5:30-7pm daily) option, though, since the word is that later meals taste rather old.
