One of Copenhagen's most popular restaurants, Els is in a building erected in 1853. It is around this time, that it housed a confectioner's shop, which the young H.C. Andersen frequently visited. Today both H.C. Andersen and the confectioner's are gone, but the building and a series of beautiful murals remain. The murals and a gigantic stuffed elk's head create a unique feeling to Els. The cuisine is a mixture of new Danish and newer French cuisine. Also the Danish smørrebrød is represented.
