Situated on a main square by Erzsebet (Elizabeth) Bridge (which serves as both a bus station and a dropping off point for hundreds of foreign coaches), Matyas Cellar is sometimes obscured behind all the buses. However, it remains extremely popular after all these years. The vast cellar can seat 300 people. Guests can dine on Hungarian fare while admiring the colorful stained glass and frescos with historical themes. The clientèle is almost always exclusively made up of tourists. Hungarian food is given many different names in different languages on the menu. The fish soup is good as is the turkey breast and the vegetable plate. Goose liver risotto is rather more imaginative, while fried mushrooms covers the same old territory. The cock soup followed by veal paprikas and a Hungarian dessert such as Somloi Galuska will fill you up for days.
