Those who care to spend serious money for a slab of charred beef should take their credit ratings here. The oldest steak-and-seafood house in town is also arguably its finest, and less afflicted with tourists than the popular Gibby's in Vieux-Montréal. It was also dark, musty, and populated with crusty waiters. Recent redecoration changed part of that equation, with four windows installed where there weren't any before. Two out of three isn't bad, and the venerable retainers who bring the food have eased up on the crabbiness. Moishes now gets the trim new breed of up-and-coming executives as well as those of the older generation who didn't know about triglycerides until it was too late. The former are more likely to go for the lighter side of the menu -- chicken teriyaki or Arctic char, perhaps -- while the latter stick with various cuts of cow in their choice of several sauces. The mixed grill is just the thing for the indecisive, as it includes two lamb chops, a Rumanian sausage, two small filet mignon, and sweetbreads. Dishes of pickles and slaw still come with the bread basket. The wine list is substantial, ranging from a C$40 (US$32) Mouton Cadet to a 1990 Romanée Conti for C$3,600 (US$2,880).
